Château Maucaillou 2016

Ripe berry fruit with a touch of spice. Oak is just perceptible, adding sweetness. But the wine is firm and structured, with plenty of drive on the finish.

Very floral and citrusy with raspberry and cherry aromas. Medium body, lively acidity and a fresh, zesty finish. Energetic. A blend of 52 percent cabernet sauvignon, 41 percent merlot and 7 percent petit verdot. Try after 2020.

Pungent tarmacadam nose. Very dry and slightly hollow palate. Not quite enough flesh. (JR)

The 2016 Maucaillou has come together quite nicely with élevage. A whole range of savory and earthy notes gives the 2016 notable character and personality around a core of sweet red cherry fruit. This bold, expressive Moulis should drink well for the next handful of years or more.

Another charming wine from the Moulis region of the Médoc (which is the MO of the terroir), the 2016 Château Maucaillou has light red fruits (raspberries, strawberries) and floral notes to go with a medium-bodied, light, elegant, deliciously gulpable feel on the palate. It’s nicely balanced and shines for its drinkability.

Garnet red with purple highlights. Bouquet of good intensity, with notes of raisins, cherries, blackcurrant and black pepper. Silky, creamy entry. On the palate, the wine is well supported by its tannins and a refreshing structure. A pleasant, well-balanced wine that can be enjoyed in its youth but also has good ageing potential.
