Château Mazeyres 2016

Warm and easy in feel, with soft-textured flavors of plum sauce, raspberry preserves and linzer torte gliding through, flecked with light herb, anise and tea notes. Shy on structure, but the fan-friendly style will have appeal. Drink now through 2028. 6,250 cases made.

Continuing a run of good vintages from this estate, this wine is extremely drinkable, with succulent red fruits, tiny pulses of minerality, great florality and lovely violet notes. A very pretty wine with good balance and a mouthwatering finish.

Very primary aromas of crushed berries and flowers. Medium to full body and tight with polished, chewy tannins. Lovely at the end. Drink in 2022.

The 2016 Mazeyres presents an exotic profile laced with bright, high-toned aromatics and super-ripe red fruits. Blood orange, mint and floral notes all run through the wine. This is a decidedly overt style of Pomerol, and yet the 2016 remains gracious and medium in body, with the perfume that is typical of sandier soils.

The Pomerol region excelled in 2016, and the Château Mazeyres is an elegant, pure, silky wine that plays nicely in the medium-bodied, classic style of the vintage. Tasting like a Grand Cru Red Burgundy with its beautiful red fruits, forest floor, and spice, it hits the palate with ultra-fine tannins, outstanding balance, and a great finish. I’d love a little more flesh, but those who prioritize elegance and purity over power and richness will like this even more than me. It benefits from air and should drink nicely for over a decade.

Garnet-ruby with a lightened rim. Plenty of red cherries and cranberry juice, with cooled raspberry tea in the background. On the very elegant palate, lots of red currant, with lingonberries in a finely aromatic finish.

Kunz barrel sample 17: floral, silky bouquet, red cherries, herbs, wood. Medium-bodied palate with delicate fruit, fine sandy tannins, sweet aromatics, light finish. Can still improve.

Despite contradictory tastings—evidence that the wine is alive and closing down—this 2016 shows a better mid-palate build thanks to the introduction of petit verdot since 2014. The tannins remain supple but are currently a bit stern. Let’s give it a few more months.

Deep notes of musk and sandalwood accompany juicy black berries. The palate is broad, caressing, and highly aromatic. A lovely wine, and a fine example for Bordeaux of a certified biodynamic estate.

Garnet red with violet highlights. The bouquet of Mazeyres 2016 unfolds with delicate precision, revealing notes of violets and a pleasant freshness. I find this freshness again on the palate, which also shows fruit. On the palate, the wine is creamy, medium in body, and supported by a good structure that lends pedigree, while the aromatic expression is reserved. This did not fully satisfy me, as Mazeyres 2016 had inspired me more during the En Primeur tastings. I therefore tasted it again on November 26, 2018, and noted that the aromatic intensity had gained in both intensity and freshness on the palate, which is why I adjusted my score from 89 to 90.

Dark, intense, deep purple color. Fruity, pure, ripe and subtle nose. A melting, suave and delicious palate with plenty of flavor and a caressing body. Good sappy, fragrant length. Very pleasant.

90–92. Barrel Sample. This is a ripe and generous wine, full of black fruits and ample acidity. There is plenty of tannic grip to frame the fruitiness. It is going to be rich, ripe and finely structured.
