The 2016 Mazeyres presents an exotic profile laced with bright, high-toned aromatics and super-ripe red fruits. Blood orange, mint and floral notes all run through the wine. This is a decidedly overt style of Pomerol, and yet the 2016 remains gracious and medium in body, with the perfume that is typical of sandier soils.

The Pomerol region excelled in 2016, and the Château Mazeyres is an elegant, pure, silky wine that plays nicely in the medium-bodied, classic style of the vintage. Tasting like a Grand Cru Red Burgundy with its beautiful red fruits, forest floor, and spice, it hits the palate with ultra-fine tannins, outstanding balance, and a great finish. I’d love a little more flesh, but those who prioritize elegance and purity over power and richness will like this even more than me. It benefits from air and should drink nicely for over a decade.

Garnet-ruby with a lightened rim. Plenty of red cherries and cranberry juice, with cooled raspberry tea in the background. On the very elegant palate, lots of red currant, with lingonberries in a finely aromatic finish.

Despite contradictory tastings—evidence that the wine is alive and closing down—this 2016 shows a better mid-palate build thanks to the introduction of petit verdot since 2014. The tannins remain supple but are currently a bit stern. Let’s give it a few more months.

Garnet red with violet highlights. The bouquet of Mazeyres 2016 unfolds with delicate precision, revealing notes of violets and a pleasant freshness. I find this freshness again on the palate, which also shows fruit. On the palate, the wine is creamy, medium in body, and supported by a good structure that lends pedigree, while the aromatic expression is reserved. This did not fully satisfy me, as Mazeyres 2016 had inspired me more during the En Primeur tastings. I therefore tasted it again on November 26, 2018, and noted that the aromatic intensity had gained in both intensity and freshness on the palate, which is why I adjusted my score from 89 to 90.

Description

Château Mazeyres 2016: a flexible and ample Pomerol

The Château Mazeyres is a red wine produced in the Pomerol appellation. The vineyard is 25.57 hectares and has vines with an average age of 30. They grow in sandy-loam soil with iron oxide. This wine is aged in barrels (30% new and 70% old) for 12 months. The Château Mazeyres 2016 is made from a blend of 90% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot.

The Château Mazeyres 2016 is a rather aerial wine with a lovely colour. On the nose, it develops floral (violet, lilac) and fruity aromas. On the palate, it is supple and full-bodied, offering flavours of alcoholic-soaked black fruit (blackcurrant, blueberry) mixed with more oaky, spicy and empyreumatic notes. The Château Mazeyres 2016 reveals quite a lovely, lengthy finish.
