Clos du Marquis 2019

Shows steeped plum, boysenberry and blackberry notes that form the core, with enough depth to absorb the apple wood and mesquite notes that line it, while a taut iron note drives the finish. Features lively savory and tobacco notes that add energy through the finish. A bit rigid in terms of structure, but that's the vintage. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2025 through 2038.

Fragrant and full with deep, rich, dark and silky tannins underpinned by great freshness. It has a smooth texture, the flavours of sweet but fresh and vibrant cherry fruit and a touch of menthol just gliding across the palate, supported by tight-knit tannins. High-toned with well-defined edges and a consistency from start to finish. You could drink this now for its rich but seductive, charming fruit-forwardness.

So much gravel and dark-fruit character with raspberries and blackcurrants, as well as currant leaf. It’s medium-to full-bodied with very fine, rounded tannins and a bright finish. 70% cabernet sauvignon, 23% merlot and 7% cabernet franc. Drinkable now, but even better in 2024.

The 2019 is an exuberant, plush Clos du Marquis packed with inky, dark fruit. All the signatures of Saint-Julien and this estate are all amplified in the glass. Licorice, lavender, spice and mocha develop, adding gorgeous layers to this decidedly extroverted Clos du Marquis. I haven't always been thrilled with how Clos du Marquis ages, but for drinking over the near and medium term, the 2019 is positively stellar.

Flowers, spice, tobacco leaf, and red and black currant aromas crowd into the perfume. There is a gorgeous freshness to the fruit, elegance to the tannins, and energy in the finish that makes this all work. The wine leaves you with a long, sweet, and vibrant red fruit, spice, earth, and tobacco note. Drink from 2024–2037.

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple glints, faintly lighter at the rim. Crisp sweetheart cherries, a hint of cassis and orange zest, soft savory wood nuances. Juicy, closely woven, elegant, sumptuous red fruit, silky tannins, racy acidity, filigreed and enlivening. A multifaceted food companion.

70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc. Deep purple. Wonderful cassis spice, followed by blackberry and Brazilian tobacco. A concentrated palate with a tightly knit tannic framework and a slightly powdery extract, a Saint-Julien style with a muscular body. The focused finish shows wild cherry and dark minerality. Still elegant through the long-lasting aftertaste. As there is less clay in the soil here, the drought led to a smaller harvest (= small berries).

Kunz barrel sample 2020: a mineral, deep, austere bouquet with cassis, cedar, and tobacco. Powerful, aromatic palate with dark fruit, a finely bourgeois structure, good tannins, pronounced aromatics, and a long, powerful finish. Has room to improve further.

An excellent vintage, with gorgeous black cherry and blackberry fruit framed by graphite and slate-smothered tannins. The texture is superb overall, with a muscular tannic grip and a scraping salinity that delivers a mouthwatering finish. Eucalyptus rather than mint on the finish adds punch and spice. The terroir for Clos du Marquis lies a little further back from the river than the main plots for Léoville Las Cases and is slightly more susceptible to water stress, but it takes the heat of the vintage in its stride. 40 hl/ha yield, 50% new oak.

The 2019 Clos du Marquis, composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, and 7% Cabernet Franc, is deep garnet-purple in color. It wears a lot of oak on the nose, giving way to a core of plum pudding, baked blackberries, and tar plus a waft of tapenade. The medium- to full-bodied palate has a sturdy structure of very firm oak tannins, appealing freshness, and taut, muscular fruit, finishing savory.

It clearly suffers from being tasted alongside the estate’s grand vin, but otherwise everything is in place for a bright future: balance and aromatic complexity, structure and persistence on the palate. It should be re-tasted blind among other classified growths. It would easily hold its own. Excellent value for money.

Clos du Marquis 2019 is a wine that is both sexy and deep. Supported by Cabernet of great nobility.

Clos du Marquis shows plenty of character and subtlety. Fruity and spicy notes with aromas of black berries and a touch of graphite. The wine has body and precise tannins that provide breadth on the palate. A serious, well-poised wine that calls for a bit of patience and stands out for its serenity. Excellent ageing potential.

94–96. Barrel Sample. The wine from a single vineyard within the Léoville Las Cases estate shows power with discretion. Its tannins and rich black currant fruits from Cabernet Sauvignon are solid, ripe and also stylish. That makes for a wine that will have balance between structure and fruit, concentration and openness. The wine is set for long aging.
