Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2022 Domaine Bruno Clair
Tasting
Colour
This French wine displays a deep ruby hue, enhanced by delicate garnet highlights that reflect its fine concentration.
Nose
Remarkably complex, the aromatic bouquet opens with notes of black fruit such as blackberry, alongside violet. It then evolves towards hints of tonka bean, sweet spices and perfectly integrated oak that never masks the vibrancy of the fruit.
Palate
Combining the characteristic power of Morey-Saint-Denis with the elegance of Chambolle-Musigny, the palate offers a dense, fleshy texture. Exceptionally fine tannins support aromas of plum jam, liquorice, dark chocolate and sandalwood. Subtle notes of chalk, oriental spices and a light smoky touch carry the wine through to a finish of remarkable length.
Food and Wine Pairing
This cuvée pairs beautifully with robust meats such as hare à la royale, beef fillet or duck in a rich dark sauce. It will also elevate scallops served with a full-bodied reduction, as well as aged raw-milk cheeses with smoky notes.
Serving and Cellaring
To fully appreciate this Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2022, it is recommended to decant it for an extended period, from two to several hours before serving, and to enjoy it at a temperature of 16–17°C. Built to age, this wine can rest in the cellar until 2032 before it begins to open up, and will reach its peak between around 2036 and 2046, with ageing potential extending well beyond 2052.
The Masterful Expression of a Great Burgundy Terroir
The Estate
Founded in 1979 by Bruno Clair, Domaine Bruno Clair is an essential benchmark in Burgundy. Based in Marsannay-la-Côte, the estate now covers twenty-seven hectares spread across eight prestigious villages. Heir to a long family tradition, the domaine is currently run by Bruno Clair, his wife Isabelle, and their children Édouard, Margaux and Arthur. Deeply committed to the authentic expression of terroir, the family favours sustainable viticulture, the historic massal selection of its vines and a soil-friendly approach to craft wines of great purity.
The Vineyard
Bonnes-Mares is a prestigious appellation straddling the border between Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis. The estate's plot, facing south-east at an altitude of 250 to 280 metres, lies on white marl soils and clay-limestone earth over a bedrock of Jurassic limestone. This exceptional terroir is home to vines planted in several stages since 1946, carefully tended using Guyot-Poussard pruning, natural grass cover and no herbicides whatsoever, in order to preserve the vitality of the soils.
The Vintage
The 2022 vintage was marked by challenging weather conditions throughout the growing season. Nevertheless, the resilience of the vines and particularly favourable harvest conditions made it possible to pick berries of remarkable quality, offering great freshness and ideal aromatic precision.
Vinification and Ageing
Vinification of the Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2022 begins with fermentation in open wooden vats using indigenous yeasts, with 20 to 50% whole clusters. Extraction is carried out gently to respect the identity of the terroir. The wine is then aged for twenty-four months in French oak barrels, 20 to 50% of which are new, resting on its fine lees without any bâtonnage before bottling.
