Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2019 from Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue
Tasting
Appearance
The appearance reveals a deep, bright and luminous cherry red hue.
Nose
The nose is initially restrained and requires aeration to fully open up. It then exudes aromas of plum liqueur, blueberry and wild strawberry, accompanied by tertiary notes evoking earth, iodine and violet petals. Subtle nuances of coffee and candied red fruit complete this complex and exuberant bouquet.
Palate
The palate is rich and opulent, with a velvety texture that coats the palate. The concentrated and ripe tannins provide a firm and nervous structure, characteristic of the great Bonnes-Mares terroir. The wine displays muscular power with a medium body, preserving the elegance typical of Chambolle-Musigny. The finish stretches out at length, revealing remarkable aromatic persistence with a slight alcoholic warmth.
Food and wine pairings
This Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2019 pairs beautifully with roasted game meats such as glazed duck, pheasant or venison. It also goes brilliantly with beef tournedos or veal in sauce preparations. For cheeses, opt for soft washed-rind cheeses like Epoisses or Soumaintrain, or soft cheeses like Brillat-Savarin or Brie de Meaux.
Service and storage
Serve the Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2019 at a temperature between 14°C and 16°C. Decanting for one to two hours before serving is recommended to allow the wine to reveal all its aromatic complexity. This wine possesses superb development potential and will gain refinement with 10 to 15 years of cellaring.
A powerful and concentrated Burgundy Grand Cru from an exceptional terroir
The estate
Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue represents one of the most prestigious estates in Burgundy, with origins dating back to 1450. Located in Chambolle-Musigny in the Côte de Nuits, the estate spans approximately 12.6 hectares of vines, including 7.12 hectares of the famous Musigny Grand Cru and 2.66 hectares of Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru. Today managed by sisters Claire de Causans and Marie de Ladoucette, representing the twenty-first family generation, the estate embodies Burgundian excellence through wines of remarkable elegance and purity. The property practices essentially organic viticulture and prioritizes the authentic expression of each terroir.
The vineyard
Bonnes-Mares is a Grand Cru located between Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis. The estate's 2.66 hectares are found on the southern part of the vineyard, mainly on the Chambolle-Musigny side. The soils present a high content of red clay, called "terres rouges," which give the wines a characteristic roundness and suppleness, contrasting with the deeper and richer soils on the Morey-Saint-Denis side. The vines benefit from a privileged exposure and an altitude between 250 and 300 meters. The estate applies voluntarily low yields and promotes biodiversity through the planting of beneficial herbs between the rows and the use of horse plowing.
The vintage
The 2019 vintage in Burgundy began with a mild winter followed by an early spring that exposed the vines to April frosts. June saw exceptionally high temperatures reaching 42°C, before moderating with cool nights preserving the acidity of the grapes. The disturbed flowering led to coulure and millerandage, producing small, concentrated berries. The summer remained dry with a few light showers, and the mild autumn allowed the winegrowers to freely choose their harvest dates. Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue began its harvest on September 14, fortunately escaping the devastating frosts. Yields were particularly low, reaching approximately 20 hectoliters per hectare.
Winemaking and aging
The Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2019 was vinified according to the estate's philosophy prioritizing the natural expression of the terroir. The grapes were mostly destemmed before maceration and fermentation in large wooden vats with indigenous yeasts. The estate practiced minimal punching down for this Bonnes-Mares in order to preserve the finesse of the fruit while extracting the necessary structure. Aging took place in French oak barrels with a maximum of 35% new oak, allowing the preeminence of the terroir over the wood to be respected. The wine was bottled without fining or filtration to preserve its authenticity and textural complexity.
