Sweet, opulent and very hedonistic. Should not disappoint. (JR)

This is quite atypical for the appellation, with so much flare and perfume. Aromas of red fruit, graphite, chalk, violets, spices and potpourri. The palate is bright and taut, with mouthwatering acidity and juicy tannins without any hard edges. Great energy brings early drinking appeal and good aging potential. Drink or hold.

Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru "Clos de Thorey" Monopole 2023 by Domaine de la Vougeraie

Tasting

Colour
Deep ruby red in colour, this wine displays subtle garnet hues at the rim.

Nose
Complex and refined, the nose opens with aromas of black cherry and ripe raspberry, enhanced by spicy notes. With aeration, delicate touches of violet and crushed raspberry emerge, along with mineral and undergrowth nuances.

Palate
The palate seduces with its silky elegance and perfect balance between fruit concentration and freshness. Delicious notes of black cherry, blackberry, cranberry and wild strawberry intertwine with subtle touches of white pepper, cinnamon and chalk. The tannins, of great finesse, accompany a long, persistent finish dominated by minerality and spice.

Food and Wine Pairing

This red wine pairs wonderfully with flavourful meats such as veal chop or beef fillet. It will also enhance feathered game dishes (duck, goose) or poultry delicately prepared with a cream and herb sauce.

Service and Storage

Blessed with superb ageing potential, this Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru "Clos de Thorey" Monopole 2023 can be cellared and enjoyed until at least 2043. As it undergoes neither filtration nor fining, a light natural sediment may form over time.

The Elegance and Purity of a Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru by Domaine de la Vougeraie

The Estate

Founded in 1999 by Jean-Charles and Nathalie Boisset, Domaine de la Vougeraie is a key figure in Burgundy, France. Located in Premeaux-Prissey, the estate oversees a vast vineyard of approximately 52 hectares spread across 37 appellations. Still owned by the Boisset family, the estate is now brilliantly managed by Sylvie Poillot. Deeply committed to the authentic expression of its terroirs, the estate stands out for its pioneering and rigorous commitment to organic farming and biodynamics, giving rise to wines of great purity.

The Vineyard

The "Clos de Thorey" is a 3.0771-hectare monopole classified as Premier Cru within the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation. Facing due south at an altitude of approximately 260 metres, this plot rests on highly calcareous soils rich in marine fossils and rounded blocks known as "têtes de mouton". The vineyard is divided into two sections, one planted in 1975 and the other in 2013. Cultivated biodynamically with horse ploughing, the vines benefit from a high planting density to encourage grape concentration.

The Vintage

2023 enjoyed mild and balanced climatic conditions, favouring optimal grape ripening. Harvest began early, on 19 August, allowing for the picking of berries with excellent aromatic concentration while preserving lovely natural freshness.

Winemaking and Aging

Winemaking for the "Clos de Thorey" Monopole 2023 begins with 95% destemming, retaining 5% whole clusters. A five-day cold maceration precedes fermentation with indigenous yeasts, for a total vatting time of approximately 18 days accompanied by gentle daily pump-overs. After very gentle vertical pressing, the wine is aged for 16 months in oak barrels (30% new oak). Bottling is carried out by gravity, without any fining or filtration.
