Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru "Les Corvées Pagets" 2023 from Domaine de la Vougeraie

Tasting

Colour
A deep ruby red, enhanced by subtle garnet hues.

Nose
The bouquet opens with aromas of well-ripened red and black fruits, such as black cherry, raspberry and blackcurrant. On aeration, a lovely complexity emerges, combining notes of violet, sweet spices and undergrowth, rounded out by delicate touches of leather, fresh earth and a pronounced minerality.

Palate
The silky attack gives way to a full-bodied, velvety palate, supported by remarkably supple tannins. Medium-bodied, this wine seduces with its balance between beautiful fruit concentration and refreshing acidity. The tender, lingering finish stretches on with delicious notes of blackcurrant and minerality.

Food and wine pairing

This red wine pairs wonderfully with flavourful meats such as grilled veal chop or a thick-cut beef steak. It will also elevate dishes with character, such as wild boar stew, pheasant, or recipes featuring wild mushrooms and truffles. When it comes to cheese, it will ideally accompany hard cheeses or aged washed-rind cheeses.

Service and storage

To fully appreciate this 2023 vintage, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature of 16 to 18°C, taking care to decant it a few hours before tasting. With fine aging potential, this wine will evolve favourably and can be enjoyed until around 2038.

The elegance and minerality of a great Nuits-Saint-Georges wine

The estate

Founded in 1999 by Nathalie and Jean-Charles Boisset, Domaine de la Vougeraie has established itself as a benchmark in Burgundy. Located in Premeaux-Prissey, this family estate oversees a 42-hectare vineyard stretching from the Côte de Nuits to the Côte de Beaune. Now led by Sylvie Poillot, the estate stands out for its deep commitment to organic farming and biodynamics. In harmony with the lunar cycles, the team strives to reveal the purest expression of its terroirs through wines of remarkable precision.

The vineyard

This cuvée comes from a small 0.33-hectare plot planted between 1987 and 1988. Ideally exposed towards the east on the southern slope of the appellation, this terroir benefits from the first morning light. The soil is notable for its high content of white Comblanchien active limestone, dotted with eroded rock formations known as "têtes de mouton" (sheep's heads). Deeper down, marl rich in oyster fossils gives the vines a unique geological identity, fostering a remarkable minerality.

The vintage

2023 stood out for its particularly favourable weather conditions, with mild temperatures that allowed the summer season to extend pleasantly. This weather encouraged optimal, balanced ripening of the berries. The harvest took place under the best possible conditions. For this particular plot, picking took place on 20 September, a date corresponding to a "flower day" according to the lunar calendar followed by the estate.

Winemaking and aging

The process begins with a rigorous selection of berries, both in the vineyard and at the winery. The winemaking includes 5% whole-cluster grapes, gravity-fed into the vats without crushing. True to its philosophy, the estate adds neither yeast nor enzymes. After a five-day cold pre-fermentation maceration, the vatting lasts around 18 days with gentle daily pumping-over. Following a gentle vertical pressing, the wine is aged for 16 months in oak barrels, about 30% of which are new.
