Description
Tasting characteristics and advice for the Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "Les Charmes" Joseph Faiveley 2018 from Domaine Faiveley
Tasting
Appearance
The wine displays a deep ruby hue with coppery highlights and a distinctive brilliance.
Nose
The nose reveals a refined range of fresh red fruits, including morello cherry, raspberry and candied strawberry. Delicate floral nuances of dried rose and violet complete the bouquet. With aeration, subtler notes of sweet spices, undergrowth and mineral touches evocative of the limestone terroir gradually emerge.
Palate
On the palate, the wine unfolds an airy yet structured texture, with a supple attack that builds in intensity. The tannins are fine and silky, never overpowering. Red fruit and floral notes carry through to an elegant, precise finish, offering remarkable length.
Food and wine pairings
This 1er Cru pairs beautifully with tender red meats such as tournedos with truffle, rack of veal with morels, or roasted lamb. It also complements small feathered game with elegance. For cheeses, opt for Brillat-Savarin, Cîteaux, Camembert or Brie. Mushroom-based dishes, notably porcini risottos and black truffle, also make excellent pairings.
Serving and cellaring
The Chambolle-Musigny 1er cru "Les Charmes" Joseph Faiveley 2018 should be served at a temperature between 14 and 16°C. Decanting for 30 to 45 minutes allows the fine tannins to soften and the aromas to fully develop. This wine has an aging potential of around 5 to 15 years.
A Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru combining Burgundian finesse and elegance
The estate
Founded in 1825 in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Domaine Faiveley remains one of the largest winegrowing landowners in Burgundy, with more than 120 hectares of vines spread across the Côte de Nuits, the Côte de Beaune and the Côte Chalonnaise. This entirely family-owned estate is now in its seventh generation, with Erwan Faiveley serving as CEO since 2005 and his sister Eve Faiveley, Communications Director since 2014. The estate holds an exceptional portfolio of 12 Grands Crus and 22 Premiers Crus. In 2025, the estate celebrated its bicentennial by obtaining organic farming certification, symbolically marking two centuries of winegrowing excellence.
The vineyard
The Climat "Les Charmes" is one of the most emblematic plots in the Chambolle-Musigny appellation, located in the heart of the Côte de Nuits. This parcel covers 9.32 hectares and borders the Grands Crus to the south of the village. The terroir stands out for its shallow brown clay-limestone soils, enriched with a remarkable proportion of active limestone and surface gravel, offering excellent minerality. The southeast exposure, at an altitude ranging from 245 to 265 meters, ensures the pinot noir ripens gradually and fully. Domaine Faiveley owns a small parcel in this Climat, producing about one and a half barrels of wine per vintage.
Winemaking and aging
The Chambolle-Musigny 1er cru "Les Charmes" Joseph Faiveley 2018 underwent 19 days of maceration with daily punch-downs, while the juice runs off by gravity. Aging takes place over 14 to 18 months in French oak barrels, 20% to 30% of which are new, allowing complete integration of the oak while preserving the wine’s fruit-driven vibrancy. This moderate proportion of new barrels is characteristic of the estate’s approach, avoiding excessive oak extraction while providing the fine tannins and aromatic complexity needed for aging.
Grape variety
100% pinot noir.
