Description
Characteristics and tasting advice for the Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "Les Charmes" Joseph Faiveley 2021 from Domaine Faiveley
Tasting
Color
The wine displays a deep ruby-red hue with bright, luminous highlights.
Nose
The nose reveals a complex, delicate bouquet of fresh red fruits, notably red cherry, raspberry and strawberry. Floral aromas of violet and rose mingle with spicy notes of white pepper, complemented by subtle smoky and vanilla touches from barrel aging.
Palate
On the palate, the wine charms with its remarkable elegance and silky texture. Fine, delicate tannins integrate harmoniously with the concentrated fruit expression, preserving lovely freshness. The structure is both robust and refined, carried by balanced acidity that brings tension without excess. The finish lingers at length on fruity and oaky notes, gradually revealing a saline minerality and a smoky touch.
Food and wine pairings
This Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Les Charmes pairs perfectly with refined poultry dishes such as braised duck with turnips or coq au vin. It also matches elegantly with delicate red meats such as beef tenderloin with béarnaise sauce or boeuf bourguignon. Mushroom-based dishes, notably a porcini risotto or truffle dishes, find beautiful harmony with this wine. For cheeses, opt for soft-ripened varieties such as Brie de Meaux and Chaource, or semi-soft cheeses such as Reblochon.
Serving and cellaring
The Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "Les Charmes" 2021 is ideally enjoyed at a temperature between 12 and 14°C to preserve its delicate aromas and freshness. Opening it 30 minutes to an hour before serving will allow the wine to fully express itself.
A Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru combining finesse and Burgundian elegance
The estate
Founded in 1825 in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Domaine Faiveley is among the most important estates in Burgundy, with around 120 to 125 hectares of vineyards spread across the Côte de Nuits, the Côte de Beaune and the Côte Chalonnaise. Now run by Erwan and Eve Faiveley, representing the seventh generation of the family, the estate produces 12 Grands Crus and 22 Premiers Crus. A pioneer in sustainable viticulture, the estate became the first in Burgundy to convert 120 hectares to organic farming, with official certification expected in July 2025, coinciding with the estate’s bicentennial. Under Erwan’s leadership since 2005 and that of cellar master Jérôme Flous since 2007, the style of the wines has evolved toward greater finesse and subtlety.
The vineyard
The climat Les Charmes occupies a privileged position at the heart of the Chambolle-Musigny appellation, located just after the famous climat Les Amoureuses, halfway between the Grands Crus Musigny and Bonnes-Mares. The vines benefit from east and south-east exposures offering optimal ripening conditions. The terroir is made up of shallow clay-limestone soils resting on a hard Jurassic limestone subsoil. This composition forces the roots to plunge deep into the limestone rock, giving the wine its distinctive minerality and aromatic complexity. These demanding conditions, typical of poor plateaus historically designated by the term "Charmes" in Burgundy, produce wines of exceptional finesse.
The vintage
The 2021 vintage proved particularly challenging in Burgundy, marked by spring frosts and contrasting weather. Despite these regional difficulties, certain areas of the Côte de Nuits, including part of Chambolle-Musigny, produced concentrated, complex wines. Rigorous grape selection and respectful winemaking made it possible to express the character of the terroir rather than trying to compensate for the challenges of the vintage.
Winemaking and aging
The Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "Les Charmes" 2021 from Domaine Faiveley is crafted with an approach that favors purity and elegance. After meticulous sorting, the grapes are mostly destemmed and then gravity-fed into the fermentation vats, thus avoiding any excessive extraction. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous and selected yeasts. After gentle pressing, the wine is aged in French oak barrels for 12 to 18 months, with a measured proportion of new oak to respect the expression of the terroir while adding subtle aromatic complexity.
