Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for the Mercurey 1er cru "Le Clos du Roy" 2023 from Domaine Faiveley
Tasting
Colour
The 2023 vintage reveals a deep red colour with bluish highlights, reflecting the fine concentration and advanced ripeness of the Pinot Noir.
Nose
The nose is youthful, fruity and spicy, blending aromas of ripe red berries, cherry and small black fruits with floral and herbaceous notes. Touches of oak and smoke complete this aromatic palette, adding depth to the whole.
Palate
The palate captivates with its concentration, driven by flavours of cherry and raspberry, enriched with nuances of fresh herbs, flowers, oak and spice. The velvety, well-integrated tannins envelop the palate with a soft, warming sensation, creating a harmonious and flavourful whole.
Food and wine pairing
This Mercurey 1er cru is an ideal match for red meats, particularly beef, whether grilled, roasted or slow-cooked. It is also an excellent companion to game, both small and large, whose wild flavours it enhances thanks to its structure and aromatic richness.
Serving and cellaring
The Mercurey 1er cru "Le Clos du Roy" 2023 can be enjoyed now, while also offering cellaring potential for those who wish to let it evolve further.
A Mercurey 1er cru from Domaine Faiveley with pronounced tannic finesse
The estate
Founded in 1825 in Nuits-Saint-Georges by Pierre Faiveley, Domaine Faiveley has established itself as one of the largest vineyard owners in Burgundy, with approximately 120 to 125 hectares spread across the Côte de Nuits, the Côte de Beaune and the Côte Chalonnaise. Now run by Erwan and Eve Faiveley, representatives of the seventh generation, the estate recently committed to a full conversion to organic farming, certified in 2025 on the occasion of its bicentenary.
The vineyard
The Mercurey 1er cru "Le Clos du Roy" climat, acquired by the Faiveley family in 1971, benefits from a south-south-westerly exposure that favours even ripening of the grapes. Its compact clay-limestone soil, made up of quick-warming white marls, gives the wine remarkable tannic finesse. The vines, planted notably in 1971 and 1982, contribute concentration and aromatic complexity derived from their advanced age.
Grape variety
This wine is made from Pinot Noir.
