Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for Saint-Amour "En Besset" 2024 from Domaine Mont Bessay
Tasting
Colour
With its lovely red hue, this wine stands out for its clarity.
Nose
Remarkably pure, the bouquet releases floral fragrances of violet and wild red berries, subtly interwoven with notes of liquorice, fennel and pencil lead.
Palate
With remarkable freshness and a delicate texture, the palate reveals a serious tannic structure. The long, fresh finish lingers on stony minerality and delicious touches of candied lemon.
Food and Wine Pairing
This red wine pairs beautifully with roast poultry, coq au vin, country terrines or herb-crusted pork fillet. It will also complement refined contemporary dishes such as grilled bluefin tuna or umami-rich Asian cuisine.
Serving and Cellaring
To fully appreciate this wine, serve it between 14 and 16°C, ideally after decanting for thirty minutes to an hour. This age-worthy wine can be enjoyed now but will continue to evolve beautifully until around 2034.
The Purity and Mineral Structure of a Great Red Wine from Saint-Amour
The Estate
Founded in 2021, Domaine Mont Bessay has established itself as one of the most notable ventures in northern Beaujolais. Set on the heights of Juliénas, the estate is run by its current owners, Philippe Pascal and Guillaume Marko, a seasoned duo from Burgundy. The domaine is distinguished by its commitment to applying a rigorous plot-by-plot philosophy, inspired by the climats of Burgundy, to high-altitude terroirs. Dedicated to demanding viticulture, the vineyard is farmed organically and biodynamically. Within just a few years, the domaine has succeeded in placing its wines among the most sought-after cuvées in the region.
The Vineyard
This wine comes from the Saint-Amour cru, on the eastern slope of the Côte de Besset hill. The old vines thrive at high altitude on very stony soils made up of granite scree and sandstone. This cool Beaujolais terroir, facing the rising sun, is cultivated according to organic and biodynamic principles, encouraging deep rooting and a unique mineral expression.
Winemaking and Ageing
The making of this 2024 vintage is based on a meticulous plot-by-plot approach known as micro-vinification. Depending on the age of the vines, whole-bunch fermentation is favoured, reaching 100% for the oldest vines grown from massal selections, in order to bring structure and complexity. The wine then undergoes long, careful ageing in barrels, refining its tannic framework while preserving the brightness of the fruit.
Grape Variety
This wine is made exclusively from Gamay.
