Description

Characteristics and Tasting Tips for Belle Leone 2013 by Peyre Rose

Tasting

Colour

The colour reveals a deep red hue with intense highlights.

Nose

The nose reveals remarkable aromatic complexity, with notes of black plum and dark cherry. Garrigue aromas emerge elegantly, accompanied by touches of tobacco, leather and liquorice. Hints of cocoa, coffee and smoke add a further tertiary dimension.

Palate

On the palate, this wine unfolds a powerful, concentrated structure with a dense, muscular texture. The silky, well-integrated tannins reflect a prolonged maturation. The aromatic palette continues with flavours of garrigue, coffee and spice that blend with the dark fruit. The finish stands out for its lingering length and a pleasant freshness that brings balance despite the concentration.

Food and Wine Pairings

This wine pairs perfectly with generous red meats such as côte de bœuf, tournedos or game. It also goes well with white fish prepared with Mediterranean seasonings or olive oil-based sauces. Blue cheeses make a remarkable match, as do preparations based on black tapenade or truffles. For a bolder pairing, this wine can accompany chocolate or caramel desserts.

Serving and Cellaring

Belle Leone 2013 can be enjoyed now. Decanting for one hour allows its aromatic complexity to express itself fully. It is recommended to serve it at a temperature of 16 to 18°C.

A Vin de France Driven by Syrah

The Estate

Founded in 1988, Peyre Rose extends over 25 hectares of vines. Marlène Soria, owner and winemaker since the beginning, still runs the estate with a philosophy resolutely focused on quality. A pioneer of organic farming in the region, she made the bold choice to favour Syrah and to adopt non-interventionist winemaking methods. The estate stands out for its unique practice of extended maturation before release, with wines aged between four and ten years before going to market.

The Vineyard

This Vin de France comes from plots located on the Plateau de Peyrals, at an altitude of between 200 and 220 metres. The vines rest on clay-limestone soils covered with a stony layer that promotes natural drainage. The vineyard benefits from a Mediterranean microclimate tempered by the Mistral and Tramontane winds, which bring precious night-time coolness that helps preserve the grapes' natural acidity. Surrounded by wild garrigue made up of lavender, thyme and rosemary, the vineyard enjoys natural protection against outside contamination. Yields are deliberately limited to around 20 hectolitres per hectare to ensure optimal concentration of aromas.

Winemaking and Maturation

The winemaking of Belle Leone 2013 follows a traditional approach that respects the fruit. Fermentations take place slowly in concrete tanks painted pink, a hallmark of the estate. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally in the same vessels. The wine is then transferred to large wooden foudres for extended maturation of several years, without the use of new barrels. This method allows a gentle oxidative maturation that preserves aromatic purity while developing the wine's complexity. After several additional years in bottle in the estate's cellars, Belle Leone 2013 is released at full maturity.
