Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Vin Jaune 2018 from Domaine Rolet
Tasting notes
Appearance
This Vin Jaune displays a light yellow hue with golden highlights, a sign of its long ageing under a veil of yeast.
Nose
The nose is balanced and reveals a bouquet of dried fruits and spices, characteristic of the Jura's wines aged under flor.
Palate
The palate echoes these same nuances of dried fruits and spices, supported by a dry, powerful structure and a lovely length on the finish.
Food and wine pairings
This 2018 Vin Jaune is ideally paired with a well-matured Comté, whose hazelnut notes complement the wine's distinctive character. It also works beautifully with white meats served with a creamy mushroom sauce, as well as with walnut desserts, extending the flavours at the end of a meal.
Serving and cellaring
The Domaine Rolet 2018 Vin Jaune is best enjoyed at a temperature between 14 and 16°C, allowing its bouquet to express itself fully without accentuating its power.
A Vin Jaune d'Arbois by Domaine Rolet, true to the Jura tradition
The estate
Founded in 1942 by Désiré Rolet in Arbois, in the Jura, Domaine Rolet has grown over the generations to become one of the largest estates in the region, spread across the four major appellations of the Jura. Since 2018, it has been jointly owned by the Flambert, Dupuis and Devillard families, with Christophe Flambert at the helm. The estate has built a particular reputation for its wines aged under flor, of which Vin Jaune is the most accomplished expression.
The vineyard
The 2018 Vin Jaune comes from the Arbois appellation, where the estate cultivates most of its vineyard on slopes well suited to Savagnin. This late-ripening grape variety is harvested by hand at the end of the harvest to reach optimal ripeness, an essential condition for withstanding long ageing under flor.
The vintage
The 2018 vintage proved broadly favourable in the Jura, providing sufficient ripeness for Savagnin while preserving the freshness needed to balance wines destined for prolonged ageing under flor.
Winemaking and ageing
The Savagnin used for this 2018 Vin Jaune is vinified according to the traditional Jura method: after a complete fermentation producing a dry wine, it is transferred to oak barrels where it rests without topping up, allowing a veil of yeast to form naturally on the surface. This ageing continues for more than six years, giving the wine its characteristic aromatic complexity.
Grape variety
This wine is made from 100% Savagnin.
