Welcome to the wild side of pinot gris, but don’t imagine for a second that this is a lush wine. In spite of all the power, this is super-cool and tense. If you have the patience, then let yourself sink into this incredibly dense and compact dry wine. Massive dark minerality in the extremely long finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Stephan Reinhardt

From 39-year-old vines on deep, rich marl soils with a higher clay content and excellent water reserves, the 2022 Clos Jebsal Turckheim Pinot Gris shows deep, clear, darker-toned aromas of intense, ripe and fairly open yet elegant fruit that initially mingle with oatmeal and later, above all, saline notes. On the palate, this is an intense and elegant, dry, gastronomic Jebsal Pinot with remarkably fine yet palpable tannins. The 2022 is complex and well balanced yet still very young, with aromas of ripe and preserved (Williams) pear and dark chocolate shavings. 13.4% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in November 2024.

The authentic, mineral expression of a great Alsace wine

The estate

Founded in 1959 following the union of two winemaking families, Domaine Zind-Humbrecht has established itself as a true benchmark within the Alsace vineyards. Located in Turckheim, the estate oversees around 40 hectares of vines spread across exceptional terroirs. A pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in the region, the estate is committed to producing wines that reflect the purity of their soils. Today, Olivier Humbrecht runs the estate alongside his wife Margaret and his son Pierre-Émile, continuing an unwavering quest for excellence.

The vineyard

The vines behind this Alsace wine are cultivated according to the strict principles of biodynamics. The estate favours working the soil with draft animals, using plant-based preparations and following the lunar calendar. Yields are deliberately kept low to encourage optimal berry concentration and an intense mineral expression.

The vintage

2022 was marked by particularly hot and dry weather conditions throughout the growing season. This climate allowed for rapid and generous ripening of the grapes. Thanks to carefully timed harvesting, the natural freshness and acidity of the berries were preserved.

Winemaking and aging

The production of this Alsace blanc 2022 is rooted in a philosophy of minimal intervention. After a gravity transfer to preserve the integrity of the fruit, fermentation begins spontaneously thanks to indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged on fine lees for an extended period, ranging from 16 to 18 months in underground cellars, allowing its texture and aromatic complexity to develop fully.

Grape varieties

This blend is made up of Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and Riesling.
