Due to the challenges of the vintage, the 2021 Hermitage Blanc is a blend of the estate’s Hermitage Tradition bottling and Ex Voto, which gives it a singular profile. Less oaky than the 2020, it is elegantly floral, revealing aromas of almonds, spring flowers, white peach and orchard fruits mingled with delicately spicy notes. Medium- to full-bodied, textural and satiny, it offers a deep, fleshy core of fruit, mineral acidity and an elegant overall profile, and it should deliver a broad drinking window, even if it is much more approachable at this stage than the 2020.

Showing slightly less flavor concentration than the surrounding two vintages, the 2021 Hermitage Blanc still delivers. Made in a refreshing style and displaying bright citrus fruits paired with cedar and floral notes, the 2021 is a distinctively elegant Hermitage Blanc.

The minerality is already quite expressive in the nose and palate, along with flowers, citrus, white peaches, and spice. There is a nice jolt of freshness, providing lift, and energy. Because no Ex-Voto was produced this year, all of that fruit was blended into the wine. Drink from 2026-2032.

Since there's no Ex Voto release in 2021, the 2021 Hermitage Blanc includes all of the grapes that would normally go into the top cuvée. It's a beauty and clearly worth seeking out. In fact, it's far off the quality of the 2020 and has medium to full-bodied richness and depth as well as textbook aromatics of orange marmalade, quince, almond paste, and honeysuckle. It has the vintage's fresher, focused style but it’s concentrated and has plenty of mid-palate depth as well as a gorgeous overall profile that will evolve for a decade at a minimum.

Description

Tasting Characteristics and Recommendations for E. Guigal’s 2021 Hermitage Blanc

Tasting

Appearance

The wine displays a bright straw-yellow hue.

Nose

The nose reveals an elegant, floral bouquet, with aromas of white flowers, honey and apricot. Notes of toasted almonds and orchard fruit gradually emerge, alongside delicately spicy touches and citrus nuances.

Palate

On the palate, this dry white wine charms with its concentration and depth. The palate shows fine minerality, characteristic of Hermitage’s granitic terroir, with aromas of white peach and white-fleshed fruits. The well-integrated acidity brings freshness and energy, while the round, powerful texture offers a lovely sense of fullness. The finish lingers with finesse and purity.

Food and wine pairings

This Rhône Valley white wine pairs perfectly with premium grilled or poached fish, seafood and shellfish. It also matches very well with white meats in a creamy mushroom sauce, as well as with aged firm cheeses.

Serving and cellaring

It is recommended to serve the 2021 Hermitage Blanc at a temperature between 10 and 12°C. This wine can be enjoyed now and will continue to develop until around 2032.

An elegant, mineral Hermitage Blanc from the Rhône Valley

The estate

Founded in 1946 by Étienne Guigal in Ampuis, in the heart of Côte-Rôtie, the House of E. Guigal has established itself as one of the most prestigious producers in the Rhône Valley. Now led by Philippe Guigal, representing the third generation, the estate spans several appellations in both the northern and southern Rhône. The domaine is notably renowned for its exceptional cuvées and its environmental commitment, having obtained High Environmental Value Level III certification. E. Guigal also has its own artisan cooperage since 2003, producing around eight hundred barrels per year to maintain perfect control over the aging of its wines.

The vineyard

The Hermitage appellation covers 309 acres planted on a spectacular granitic hill overlooking the banks of the Rhône. This exceptional terroir, cultivated for over twenty-four centuries, benefits from south- and east-facing exposures that ensure maximum sunlight. Granitic soils provide excellent drainage and mineral richness, reflected in the wines’ character. The warm continental climate and the northerly wind bring freshness and balance throughout the growing season. White wines account for around 30% of the appellation’s production.

The vintage

The 2021 vintage in the northern Rhône Valley was marked by challenging weather conditions. A devastating frost in early April affected many appellations, although the Hermitage hill was relatively spared. The rainy spring encouraged the development of downy mildew and botrytis, while flowering proved delicate. Persistent rainfall in June and hail episodes in early summer further complicated the season. A late mini heatwave allowed for proper veraison, but harvest was delayed by two weeks compared with 2020, beginning in September. The great hillside terroirs and old vines made it possible to produce quality wines despite these challenges.

Vinification and aging

Due to the specific characteristics of the 2021 vintage, Hermitage Blanc is a blend of the Tradition cuvée and parcels usually intended for the Ex-Voto cuvée, which was not produced separately this year. The wine was aged for twenty-four months in French oak, split evenly between new barrels and second-fill barrels. These barrels were made entirely in the estate’s cooperage, enabling precise control over wood selection and toast intensity.
