Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of the Riesling "Scharzhofberger Spätlese" 2022 from Egon Muller
Tasting notes
Color
The color reveals a brilliant golden yellow hue, enhanced by delicate greenish highlights.
Nose
Highly elegant and refined, the aromatic bouquet exudes scents of vine peach, pear and acacia, heightened by touches of minty herbs. Subtle citrus notes, reminiscent of bergamot, intermingle with white flower scents such as honeysuckle.
Palate
The palate offers an exceptionally fine texture, airy and delicate. It unfolds delicious notes of apricot, white peach, almond and grapefruit. There is a remarkable balance between the sweetness of a mirabelle plum compote and the liveliness of a biting acidity with citrus accents. The impressively long finish stands out for its irresistible freshness and saline minerality reminiscent of wet slate.
Food and wine pairing
This white wine pairs beautifully with seafood such as oysters or gratinated lobster, as well as with noble poached or grilled fish like turbot. It also enhances spicy Asian cuisine, dishes made with smoked pork or sweet-and-sour sauces, and washed-rind cheeses. At the end of a meal, it will ideally accompany stone fruit desserts, such as a mirabelle tart or an apricot crumble.
Service and storage
The Riesling "Scharzhofberger Spätlese" 2022 shows exceptional aging potential and can be enjoyed until around 2060.
Other characteristics
This wine has an alcohol content of 10% vol. and a marked sweetness, with residual sugars reaching 60 g/L.
The elegance and purity of a great white wine from Germany by Egon Muller
The estate
Founded in 1797 by Jean-Jacques Koch, the Egon Muller estate is a true icon of the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer wine region in Germany. Now led by Egon Müller IV, this illustrious family estate continues a tradition of excellence built on the deep conviction that quality is born exclusively in the vineyard. As the sole German member of the prestigious Primum Familiae Vini association, the estate produces wines of remarkable rarity and purity, renowned worldwide for their authentic expression and exceptional longevity.
The vineyard
Located on steep, south-facing slopes, the Scharzhofberg terroir spreads over soils of grey and red Devonian slate mixed with quartzite deposits. This unique geology allows for deep root penetration throughout the region. The estate cultivates its vines without any chemical fertilizers or herbicides. Part of the vineyard is home to ungrafted vines planted in the late 19th century, yielding naturally very low quantities thanks to a particularly high planting density.
The vintage
The year 2022 was marked by a particularly hot summer. These high summer temperatures were later tempered by a cool and humid September, providing ideal weather conditions to shape a vintage with a very classic profile.
Winemaking and aging
The harvest is done entirely by hand, requiring up to seven successive passes to select the best berries. The vinification of the Riesling "Scharzhofberger Spätlese" 2022 takes a minimally interventionist approach, with no chaptalization, and spontaneous fermentation triggered by indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged in traditional thousand-liter foudres.
