Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for La Champine Syrah 2024 by Jean-Michel Gérin
Tasting notes
Colour
The glass reveals a beautiful, vivid red hue.
Nose
The bouquet opens with lovely freshness, releasing vibrant aromas of small red fruits such as black cherry and raspberry. Subtle spicy and peppery touches, typical of the grape variety, complete this aromatic palette without being masked by oaky notes.
Palate
On the palate, this medium-bodied wine stands out for its silky texture and supple, refined tannins. It offers superb balance between refreshing acidity and a concentration of fruity flavours, stretching towards a finish that is full of roundness and softness.
Food and wine pairings
This cuvée pairs wonderfully with braised beef with carrots, charcuterie platters or roast duck. It will also be a perfect match for aged hard cheeses, tomato lasagne or umami-rich vegetarian dishes such as roasted root vegetables or mushrooms with chorizo.
Serving and cellaring
Approachable in its youth, La Champine Syrah 2024 can be enjoyed now, but also has the structure needed to evolve favourably in the cellar until around 2034.
The Authentic, Fruit-Driven Expression of a Vin de France Crafted by Jean-Michel Gérin
The estate
The year 1983 marked a historic turning point for Jean-Michel Gérin: after six generations of winegrowers, he became the first in his family to bottle and sell his own wine. Today, he runs this estate of around nineteen hectares with his two sons, Michaël and Alexis. Together, they uphold a philosophy centred on the meticulous exploration of terroirs and respect for the environment. The estate stands out for its sustainable approach, crowned by organic certification obtained in 2023 for all of its vines.
The vineyard
Classified as Vin de France, the plots used for this cuvée are located on plains and plateaus. The vines thrive on terroirs composed of mica schist and granite, at various altitudes. The estate applies organic viticulture principles, with entirely hand-harvested grapes and high planting density to naturally limit vigour and promote grape quality.
The vintage
The 2024 vintage was marked by a favourable growing season, spared from excessive heat stress. The mild weather conditions allowed for healthy fruit development and a steady ripening cycle, resulting in a serene harvest without the pressure of picking prematurely.
Winemaking and ageing
After a manual harvest in small twenty-five-kilo crates to protect the berries, the grapes are fully destemmed. Fermentation starts with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled tanks, with a maceration of around four weeks. Ageing lasts one year and takes place mainly in stainless steel tanks to preserve the purity of the fruit, while the remainder rests in neutral oak barrels that have previously held four to five vintages.
