Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru 2022 Joseph Drouhin
Tasting
Colour
The colour reveals an intense, brilliant ruby hue, enhanced by delicate violet highlights.
Nose
Wonderfully complex, the bouquet opens with aromas of dark fruits such as blackberry, blueberry and blackcurrant, harmoniously blended with floral notes of peony and violet. With aeration, subtle spicy touches emerge.
Palate
Full-bodied and fleshy, the palate offers a perfect balance between freshness and structure. The silky tannins are matched by a lovely liveliness and indulgent flavours of cherry and cocoa bean. The remarkably long finish unfolds a velvety texture of great elegance.
Food and Wine Pairing
This red wine from France pairs wonderfully with flavourful meats such as a côte de bœuf or a herb-roasted leg of lamb. It also enhances game dishes in sauce, pan-fried wild mushrooms, as well as characterful cheeses such as Époisses.
Service and Storage
To release its full aromatic palette, we recommend opening this Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru 2022 between thirty minutes and one hour before serving, at an ideal temperature of between 16 and 18°C. With exceptional ageing potential, this wine can be enjoyed until around 2052.
The Elegance and Depth of a Grand Cru from Burgundy by Joseph Drouhin
The Estate
Founded in 1880 in Beaune by a visionary young wine merchant, the House of Joseph Drouhin has established itself as an essential reference in Burgundy. Now led by the fourth generation, with Frédéric Drouhin at the helm, the estate oversees a vast vineyard of around a hundred hectares spread across the region's finest terroirs. A pioneer of organic and biodynamic farming since the 1990s, the family estate stands out for its deep ecological commitment and constant pursuit of excellence, producing wines that express the nuance of each parcel with great purity.
The Vineyard
Located in the commune of Flagey-Echezeaux in the Côte de Nuits, the Grands-Echezeaux terroir rests on Bajocian limestone soils mixed with clay marl. Facing east, the vines benefit from ideal morning sunlight. The estate cultivates its plots according to strict biodynamic principles, with high planting densities and horse ploughing to preserve the vitality of the soils. The harvest is carried out by hand in small perforated crates.
The Vintage
The year 2022 stood out for particularly hot, dry and sunny weather conditions. Following early bud break, the growing cycle unfolded under fluctuating weather, yet the vines remained in impeccable health. The heat of August allowed the berries to reach optimal ripeness, leading to an early harvest starting at the end of the month, yielding remarkably balanced fruit with no over-ripeness whatsoever.
Winemaking and Aging
For the production of this Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru 2022, the technical team chose to include a significant proportion of whole clusters during fermentation. This meticulous approach draws out superior aromatic complexity and highlights the delicate spicy nuances of the cru.
