James Suckling

Jim Gordon

An unusually bright, light-gold color with hints of green in it distinguish this rare wine from the first glance before rich, layered and complex aromas lead to even richer poached pears, hazelnuts and cream on the palate. Full-bodied but light on its feet, the wine shows deft balance, great depth and incredible length on the finish. Best from 2028.

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Montrachet Grand Cru "Marquis de Laguiche" 2022 Joseph Drouhin

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals a splendid pale gold hue, enriched with golden highlights over time.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet reveals great complexity, opening with delicate floral notes reminiscent of lily of the valley and peach blossom. It then evolves towards aromas of ripe stone fruits such as white peach and pear, enhanced by touches of honey, toasted almonds and a subtle woodiness, all underpinned by a deep minerality.

Palate
The attack is soft and fleshy, revealing a harmonious roundness devoid of any heaviness. The mid-palate expands with delicious notes of pear, hazelnut and cream. The finish, with lovely persistence, extends this aromatic palette with a pronounced mineral thread.

Food and wine pairing

This white wine pairs harmoniously with fish in creamy or buttery sauces, as well as with shellfish such as lobster or scallops. It also accompanies delicately prepared poultry and aged cheeses with hazelnut notes.

Service and storage

To fully appreciate the Montrachet Grand Cru "Marquis de Laguiche" 2022, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 14 and 15°C. Aerating in a decanter or opening the bottle thirty to sixty minutes before tasting is advised. This wine offers an ideal tasting window between eight and fifteen years, and may continue to evolve in the cellar until around 2042.

The masterful expression of a white Burgundy wine by Joseph Drouhin

The estate

Founded in 1880 in Beaune, the house of Joseph Drouhin is a true institution in Burgundy, France. Now led by the fourth generation, with Frédéric Drouhin at the helm as president, the estate oversees around 100 hectares of vineyards spread across the region's most prestigious appellations. A pioneer at heart, the estate obtained its organic certification as early as 1990 and applies the principles of biodynamics. The family thus continues to uphold a refined expertise, combining respect for the terroir with sustainable environmental practices.

The vineyard

Montrachet is one of the most renowned terroirs for white wines. The Marquis de Laguiche plot, the largest in the appellation at 2.06 hectares, has belonged to the same family since 1776 and has been cultivated by the Drouhin house since 1947. Facing south-east on a gentle slope, the vines thrive on brown and red soils, dotted with white limestone pebbles polished by time.

The vintage

2022 stood out for its particularly favourable weather conditions. After a winter with typical temperatures and rainfall, a warm February led to an early start to the vegetative cycle. The dry spring and favourable temperatures that followed until early summer allowed for a steady and optimal ripening of the berries, ensuring a generous harvest of excellent sanitary quality.

Winemaking and aging

The grapes for the Montrachet Grand Cru "Marquis de Laguiche" 2022 are hand-harvested in small perforated crates, followed by a rigorous sorting process. The berries undergo slow pneumatic pressing, separating the first juices from the final press. After settling, fermentation takes place entirely in French oak barrels, 30% of which are new. The wine is then aged for eighteen to twenty-one months, with regular tastings to ensure perfect integration of the oak.

Grape variety

100% Chardonnay.
