Description

Characteristics and tasting tips for the Musigny Grand Cru 2022 Joseph Drouhin

Tasting notes

Colour
This red wine reveals a colour of exceptional purity, displaying a light to medium ruby hue whose brilliance testifies to the outstanding quality of the grapes.

Nose
In its youth, the bouquet opens with fresh aromas of violet and flint. With aeration, it gains depth, revealing beautiful complexity blending notes of blackberry, blueberry and blackcurrant, enhanced by floral touches of peony.

Palate
The palate stands out for its harmony and breadth. Remarkably fresh, it offers an almost viscous texture supported by silky, delicate yet lively tannins. Spicy notes underscore this perfect balance between aromatic richness and structure.

Food and wine pairing

This vintage pairs wonderfully with delicate feathered game such as partridge or pheasant, as well as with roasted meats like lamb or veal. When it comes to cheese, it beautifully complements soft-ripened varieties such as Brillat-Savarin, Reblochon or Chaource.

Service and storage

To fully appreciate the Musigny Grand Cru 2022, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 16 and 18°C. This wine, built to age, will offer an optimal tasting experience within 15 to 20 years and can continue to evolve in the cellar until around 2052.

The authentic expression of a prestigious Burgundy terroir

The estate

Founded in 1880 in Beaune, Maison Joseph Drouhin is a true institution in Burgundy. A pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture as early as the 1980s, this historic estate today spans around a hundred hectares across numerous prestigious appellations. Still independent, the estate is currently run by the fourth generation, represented by Robert's four children: Frédéric, Véronique, Philippe and Laurent Drouhin. They passionately carry on a unique family expertise, combining respect for the environment with a constant pursuit of excellence to reveal the quintessence of each terroir.

The vineyard

Located in the Côte de Nuits, the Musigny terroir sits on a terrace overlooking the famous Clos de Vougeot. The vines benefit from an eastward exposure and thrive on a gentle slope with brown, limestone-rich soils scattered with pebbles. The estate cultivates two highly selective plots here, totalling 0.68 hectares, located in the northern part of the appellation. The entire vineyard is managed according to organic and biodynamic principles, with deliberately limited yields to promote biodiversity and soil health.

The vintage

The year 2022 was marked by particularly hot, dry and sunny conditions, setting a record since the beginning of the last century. The growing cycle was punctuated by several heat peaks during August. Despite these extreme weather conditions, the harvested grapes displayed perfect health, exceptional phenolic ripeness and ideally preserved acidity.

Winemaking and aging

The grapes are hand-harvested in small, perforated crates, followed by rigorous sorting. The winemaking process for the Musigny Grand Cru 2022 incorporates a proportion of 20 to 50% whole clusters. Fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts in small open vats, accompanied by gentle punching down and pumping over over two to three weeks. The wine is then aged for 16 to 20 months in French oak barrels, 30% of which are new, in order to preserve the authenticity of the fruit.
