Carillon d'Angelus 2016

Dense, juicy, crisp, firm tannins, long berry-driven finish; developing more and more character.

Second label. Inviting aromas of ripe black fruit, floral, raspberry leaf and wet stone. Red fruits dominate the palate with a soft, juicy and chewy sensation. Concentrated but lifted. Retains a sense of direction and finesse.

This is very reserved and tight with super-fine tannins that are forceful and beautiful. Full-bodied, layered and beautiful. The tannins are forceful yet polished and thoughtful. Second wine of Château Angélus. Try after 2023.

The 2016 Le Carillon d'Angélus is absolutely gorgeous. In 2016, Carillon is 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, with the Franc bringing considerable aromatic intensity and brightness to the wine. Deep, sensual and beautifully layered, the 2016 is a fabulous wine from Angélus. The new oak is a bit too much for a wine with this kind of mid-weight structure, but that is a relatively small critique for a wine that offers so much pleasure. Moreover, it will drink well upon release.

This is drinking just great today, promptly offering up its supple, plushly textured dark red fruits, earth and cocoa, and a silky finish. Popped and poured, this hit all the right notes from the moment it hit your glass.

Deep dark ruby, firm core, purple reflections and delicate brightening on the rim. Fine ripe plum fruit on the nose, blackberry fruit, delicately floral with candied orange zest and some nougat. Complex and juicy, ripe dark berry fruit, vivid, plump tannins and long with a chocolaty touch on the finish. Showing good signs of development, but has certain ageing potential.

ripe fruit with notes of wild berries, a herbal spiciness like sage, bay leaf and jammy plum with some roasted notes. Dense palate, ripe, warm and unctuous with a rather loose texture, melted tannins, sweet and attractive fruit with gingerbread spice and a rather long and bold finish.

From the team at Angélus yet from a separate terroir, the 2016 Carillon d’Angélus is made from 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, all of which spent 14–16 months in 50% new oak. This medium- to full-bodied effort shows true Angélus character with a rocking nose of cassis, dried herbs, graphite, spice box, and chocolate-laced aromas and flavors. It leads to a seamless, balanced, impressively textured wine that’s already drinking well yet promises to evolve for 10–15 years.

75% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc. Extremely dark purple with a black core, very dense bouquet of morello cherries with rosewood and dark tobacco. On the palate, powerful stature and a finely muscular body, yet the tannins are ultra-fine and perfectly polished; the finish shows cassis and plenty of blueberries. Great second wine!

Silky texture, sweet bouquet, strawberry jelly, blackberries, mocha, caramel. Medium-bodied, balanced palate with delicate fruit, fine sandy tannins, good aromatics, bitter finish. 17/20 2022 - 2034

The 2016 Carillon d’Angelus is a blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. Medium to deep garnet in color, it bursts from the glass with notes of baked black plums, boysenberry preserves, and chocolate-covered cherries, leading to wafts of tar, tilled soil, black truffles, and underbrush. Medium-bodied, the palate is taut, muscular, and chewy with loads of earthy layers on the long finish. It can be approached now but can cellar with confidence for 10–12 years+.

On a lively nose still slightly dominated by oak, the sanguine bouquet grows more complex with ripe red fruit. La Carillon is a charmer, agreeable in this well-defined vintage.

Nose of fresh fruit, redcurrant, raspberry, cherry. Clean attack, morello cherry, round and elegant tannins, graphite, very long. A very fine second wine.

Aged 50% in new barrels and 50% in once‑used barrels. Dense garnet red with violet highlights. Intense, complex, inviting bouquet with notes of raspberry and cherry. On the palate, the wine shows beautiful aromatic intensity and a chalky touch. It has tension, fruit, and character. Persistent finish.

The nose is fruity and offers subtle generosity and elegance. It reveals notes of blackberry and raspberry, and, more lightly, small fleshy/ripe berries, along with hints of flowers and delicate touches of spice. The palate is fruity, balanced, and offers freshness, finesse, precision, a subtle fresh backbone, and minerality. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of blackberry, raspberry, and ripe/crushed red berries, with small floral touches and discreet hints of spices, cardamom, and tonka bean. The tannins are fine, slightly firm, and very finely powdery. Good length.

Dark, intense colour, already showing slight development. Moderately aromatic nose, with ripe, suave fruit. Delicate on the attack, precise in texture, melting and fragrant, the wine unfolds with savoury richness and a firm finish. It lingers long on a very pleasant backdrop of fruit and hazelnuts. A fine success.
