Decanter

Supple and juicy with both ripe creamy fruit and lively acidity as well as firm structure. I like the Cabernet aspect – blackcurrant leaf, bramble berries, fresh mint, concentrated, dark and cool with a delicious wet stone, flinty, salty aspect. Not too dense but there’s length and good body with a real push of aromas and fragrance as well as intensity of flavour all the way through. Very good. 3.6pH. A yield of 28hl/ha. Began the red harvest from the 3 September to the end.

Quite floral, before you find the herbs, cherries, and black pit fruits. The medium bodied palate struts its vivid display of red with black fruits. Give it a few years in the bottle and it will be even better. The wine blends 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. 13% ABV. Drink from 2028-2042. 92-94 Pts

Sleek wet stones, linear, squid ink, fragrant, crushed mint leaf, succulent, super classy, dark leafy, poised and precise, just a brilliant Petit with so much to recommend. 28hl/ha yield 10% new oak, Fabien Teitgen technical director.

Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes of the Petit Smith Haut Lafitte 2025

Tasting

Nose
The bouquet is both subtle and remarkably refined. It releases deep aromas of blackcurrant, blueberry and black cherry, delicately interwoven with notes of garrigue, liquorice wood, smoked tobacco and sweet spices.

Palate
From the first sip, the wine reveals itself as ample and wonderfully precise. The texture is harmonious, perfectly supported by ripe, compact and chalky tannins. A beautiful mineral backbone, reminiscent of damp gravel, brings great freshness and complexity to the whole. The savoury, mouth-watering finish stretches out at length, sealing a refined, deep and elegant wine.

Food and wine pairings
This red wine will pair beautifully with grilled or roasted red meats, such as a fine cut of beef or lamb. It will also accompany roasted poultry, duck breast, and slow-cooked dishes with mushrooms or truffle very well, echoing its smoky notes.

Serving and cellaring
To fully appreciate Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte 2025, it is recommended to open it thirty to sixty minutes before serving. This wine offers fine cellaring potential, allowing it to be enjoyed until around 2040.

The Elegance and Freshness of a Great Pessac-Léognan Wine by Château Smith Haut Lafitte

The estate
While the presence of vines is documented as early as 1365, the true creation of the estate dates back to 1720, when Scottish merchant George Smith built the chartreuse and gave the place his name. Located in Martillac, at the heart of the Bordeaux region, this 78-hectare vineyard has belonged to Florence and Daniel Cathiard since 1990. These passionate owners have raised the estate to the very top thanks to a pioneering bio-precision approach and major ecological innovations. Today, Château Smith Haut Lafitte shines worldwide, combining respect for its historic terroir with exceptional wine tourism.

The vineyard
The vines dedicated to this second wine, with an average age of twelve years, thrive on the prestigious Günzian gravel terroir typical of the Pessac-Léognan appellation. The vineyard is entirely managed according to the principles of organic farming and biodynamics, with a controlled yield of 28 hectolitres per hectare to ensure optimal concentration and quality of the grapes.

Winemaking and aging
The creation of the Petit Smith Haut Lafitte 2025 begins with a rigorous double sorting of the bunches, before and after destemming. Vinification is carried out with whole berries, partially incorporating whole clusters, in the stealth, positive-energy cellar renowned for its innovative CO₂ recycling system. Extractions are conducted gently through punching down and pumping over, followed by long macerations between 26 and 28 °C, tailored to each vat to preserve balance. The wine is then aged for fourteen months in barrels, including 10% new oak, all crafted by the estate's in-house cooperage.

Grape varieties
This wine comes from a blend composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot.
