Decanter

Good depth of colour, luminous. There’s a nice sense of purity here, it’s certainly ripe but not jammy or overripe. 10% whole bunch gives it a complex, spicy/herbal dimension. Medium-bodied, it's sufficiently concentrated but very drinkable, with fine tannins. It’s very classic. Strangely both very young at this stage, and quite drinkable; not overly concentrated, but it does have tannin. This will be a very elegant, compact and attractive St-Joseph when it's ready.

Cask sample. Hand-harvested. Vinification in small concrete vats with 10–15% whole bunch. Fermentation with indigenous yeasts and moderate use of SO2. Maceration for 3 weeks. Aged in barrel and muids for around 18 months, with 15% new barrels. pH 3.52, TA 3.46 (sulphuric). Deep crimson with a purple rim. Gorgeous aromatic combination of black pepper and intense violet-laced black fruit. Succulent, chewy tannins, smooth but thickly textured now and set to become much more refined with time. Generous, perfumed, with excellent freshness on the finish. Pure Syrah moderated by the stony/dry character derived from the site. The flavors linger on the palate and shouldn’t be rushed. Deliciously dry aftertaste. (JH)

Tasting

Appearance

The wine displays a deep red color with bright highlights, reflecting the excellent concentration of syrah on this exceptional terroir.

Nose

The aromatic bouquet reveals great complexity, expressing intense notes of red and black fruits enhanced by a pronounced minerality reminiscent of flint. Subtle hints of spice complete this harmonious aromatic profile.

Palate

The attack is full and perfectly balanced. The texture unfolds with a silky mouthfeel where the freshness of the granitic terroir blends with elegant tannins. The finish, remarkably long, lingers on delicate spicy nuances.

Food and wine pairings

Thanks to its elegant structure and spicy aromas, this red wine pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted red meats. It also complements slightly spiced dishes or a selection of aged cheeses, such as picodon, whose character echoes the vibrancy of the cuvée.

Serving and cellaring

With exceptional aging potential, Saint-Joseph "Les Granits" 2024 can be enjoyed until around 2084. To fully appreciate its complexity, its peak drinking window is estimated between 2026 and 2036.

A Saint-Joseph red faithful to the minerality of its terroir

The estate

Founded in 1808 in Tain-l'Hermitage, the Maison M. Chapoutier is a true institution of the Rhône Valley. Under the leadership of Michel Chapoutier, who took over in 1990, the estate has become a pioneer of environmentally respectful viticulture. Today, Michel is gradually handing over the reins to his children, Mathilde and Maxime. With a vineyard spanning 389 hectares cultivated according to biodynamic principles, the estate is dedicated to revealing the purest expression of its terroirs through remarkably precise parcel selections.

The vineyard

This cuvée comes from very old vines rooted in the steep, granitic slopes of the commune of Tournon. This historic terroir, located at the heart of the Saint-Joseph appellation, gives the grapes exceptional minerality and optimal concentration, faithfully reflecting the identity of this rugged wine-growing landscape.

Winemaking and aging

The production of the "Les Granits" 2024 cuvée follows a low-intervention philosophy. The harvest is carried out by hand at full ripeness. Fermentation begins naturally thanks to indigenous yeasts. Aging is then divided: the majority of the wine is aged in tanks or large vats for 8 to 10 months to preserve fruit purity and mineral freshness, while the remaining quarter is aged in demi-muids, adding further power and aromatic complexity before the final blend.

Grape variety

"Les Granits" 2024 by M. Chapoutier is made from 100% syrah.
