Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Santenay Village "Vieilles Vignes" 2023 Marc Colin et Fils

Tasting Notes

Colour
Ruby red in colour, this vin de France reveals a lovely translucency along with a luminous brilliance.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with notes of red and black fruits such as raspberry, blackcurrant and cherry, nuanced by subtle hints of plum. With aeration, spicy notes of cinnamon and white pepper emerge, complemented by aromas of violet, liquorice and cedar.

Palate
The attack is tender and supple, revealing crisp fruit and great freshness. The mid-palate offers lovely breadth balanced by vibrant acidity. The particularly silky, well-integrated tannins accompany a lingering finish where fruity and mineral flavours intertwine.

Food and Wine Pairing

This red wine pairs wonderfully with roasted poultry, duck or feathered game such as pheasant. It also pairs beautifully with delicate red meats such as roasted veal or herb-crusted lamb, as well as characterful cheeses such as Époisses or an aged Comté.

Service and Storage

Approachable even in its youth thanks to its delicate tannic structure, this Santenay Village "Vieilles Vignes" 2023 can continue to age in the cellar and develop further until around 2033.

Other Characteristics

This wine has an alcohol content of 13%.

The Elegance and Mineral Precision of a Red Burgundy Wine

The Estate

Founded in 1970 by Marc Colin and his wife Michèle, the Marc Colin et Fils estate is located in Saint-Aubin, at the heart of the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy, France. Starting out with just six hectares, the estate now spans around twenty hectares. Since 2018, the estate has been run by the founder's children, Damien and Caroline Colin. True to a philosophy of purity, elegance and respect for terroir, the duo carries on the family's tradition of excellence by favouring sustainable viticulture in order to reveal the authenticity of each plot.

The Vineyard

The grapes come from the Santenay appellation, south of the Côte de Beaune. This wine is crafted from a blend of several historic climats, including "Champs Claude", "Les Bievaux", "Clos Genet" and "Sous la Roche". Facing southeast, these plots lie on shallow clay-limestone soils. They stand out for the venerable age of their vines, some of which were planted around 1910, naturally yielding limited quantities and exceptional concentration. The vines are cultivated according to the principles of sustainable farming.

The Vintage

The year 2023 began with a particularly mild winter and early spring, encouraging early budbreak. Although April proved cooler, flowering took place under optimal conditions in mid-May. Summer was then marked by intense heatwaves in July and August, accelerating berry ripening. Despite fungal pressure late in the summer season, cooler nights in September helped preserve lovely acidity ahead of an early harvest.

Winemaking and Ageing

The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand. For this Santenay Village "Vieilles Vignes" 2023, fermentation begins naturally thanks to indigenous yeasts, under carefully controlled temperatures to encourage gentle extraction. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, with around 15% new oak, complemented by neutral barrels. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally, followed by bottling with minimal fining and filtration.

Grape Variety

This wine is made from 100% Pinot Noir.
