Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Gevrey-Chambertin Village "Vieilles Vignes" 2023 by Marc Roy
Tasting
Appearance
The wine shows a beautiful red colour.
Nose
The bouquet is vibrant and complex, opening with aromas of ripe red fruits such as cherry, raspberry and crushed strawberry. Delicate floral notes of violet intertwine with touches of spice, liquorice, graphite and forest floor.
Palate
Structured and silky, the palate offers a medium body supported by exceptionally fine tannins. A lively, well-integrated acidity brings freshness, leading to a long, mineral and savoury finish.
Food and Wine Pairing
This wine pairs wonderfully with herb-crusted rack of lamb, grilled meats or charcuterie. It also works very well with vegetarian dishes such as a beetroot and goat's cheese tart, as well as with mature cheeses.
Serving and Cellaring
This Gevrey-Chambertin Village "Vieilles Vignes" 2023 can be enjoyed in its youth for its radiant fruit, but it also has fine ageing potential, allowing it to be cellared until around 2033.
The Elegance and Purity of a Great Gevrey-Chambertin Village Wine
The Estate
Located in Gevrey-Chambertin, in the heart of Burgundy, Domaine Marc Roy is a family estate whose origins go back several generations. In the absence of an official founding date, the year 2003 marks a major turning point, when Alexandrine Roy, representing the fourth generation, took over the estate from her father, Marc Roy. This micro-estate of around four hectares stands out for its artisanal approach and its focus on village appellations. The winemaker tends her vines like a true garden, producing wines of remarkable purity.
The Vineyard
The grapes come from two emblematic lieux-dits of the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation: Vignes Belles and La Justice. These complementary parcels, located on the lower and middle slopes, lie on clay-limestone and marl soils typical of the region. The vineyard is made up of very old vines, 70 to 80 years old or more, cultivated according to the principles of sustainable farming. Rigorous soil work, with regular ploughing and meticulous manual interventions, allows the roots to draw deeply from the limestone, thus favouring an authentic expression of the terroir.
Vinification and Ageing
The harvest is entirely by hand, followed by a rigorous sorting in the vineyard. For this Gevrey-Chambertin Village "Vieilles Vignes" 2023, the bunches are fully destemmed before a pre-fermentation maceration. Fermentation takes place in open wooden vats using exclusively indigenous yeasts, with foot punch-downs and pump-overs. The wine is then aged for 14 to 16 months in French oak barrels, with a significant proportion of new oak of between 30% and 50%. A light filtration and a gentle fining precede bottling.
