Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for the Mauro Molino Barolo "La Serra" 2022
Tasting notes
Colour
Adorned with luminous highlights, this cuvée reveals a magnificent garnet red colour.
Nose
Displaying great aromatic richness, the bouquet exudes floral perfumes of rose petals and lavender, mingled with notes of orange zest, licorice and smoke. With aeration, touches of chocolate, tobacco, wild herbs and red fruits enrich this complex palette.
Palate
With a medium to full body, the palate stands out through tannins that are both firm and perfectly integrated. Vibrant acidity brings a lovely freshness, underscored by a savoury and saline minerality. The finish offers remarkable length, supported by a persistent tannic structure.
Food and wine pairing
This red wine pairs perfectly with full-bodied red meats such as beef fillet, game (wild boar, duck) or traditional slow-cooked dishes such as osso buco. It also enhances dishes featuring wild mushrooms, white truffle risotto, as well as aged cheeses like Parmesan.
Service and storage
For an optimal tasting experience of the Barolo "La Serra" 2022, it is recommended to decant it at least an hour before serving and to enjoy it in large glasses at a temperature between 16 and 18°C. This wine can be enjoyed now but will continue to develop in the cellar until around 2042.
Other characteristics
This cru stands out for its distinctive salinity on the palate, a direct legacy of its magnesium-rich terroir. Furthermore, the vines are cultivated according to sustainable principles very close to organic farming, favouring organic fertilizers and natural cover crops.
The elegance and minerality of a great wine from Piedmont
The estate
Founded in 1982 by a passionate winemaker, the Mauro Molino estate has established itself as an essential reference in Piedmont. Located in the commune of La Morra, this family-run operation oversees around twenty hectares of vineyards. Today, the estate is run by the second generation, Matteo and Martina Molino, who carry on their father's legacy. They skillfully combine respect for local traditions with a contemporary approach, while firmly committing to sustainable viticulture in order to express the quintessence of their terroirs.
The vineyard
The "La Serra" cru sits atop the highest part of La Morra, within the prestigious Barolo appellation. This high-altitude terroir benefits from a cool microclimate, swept by alpine breezes, which slows the ripening of the berries. The soils, composed of clay and limestone with a high concentration of magnesium, give the grapes a unique mineral identity.
The vintage
The year 2022 proved agronomically complex, marked by significant climatic challenges including fluctuations in temperature and humidity. These demanding conditions required extremely rigorous selection in the vineyard, reducing regional yields, but ultimately allowed for the harvest of berries of unexpected quality, offering a fully accomplished growing cycle and remarkable balance.
Winemaking and aging
After manual harvesting in October, the whole clusters are gently crushed. Maceration of the Barolo "La Serra" 2022 takes place over about ten days in stainless steel tanks, followed by an alcoholic fermentation of around twenty days. Malolactic fermentation then takes place in French oak barrels. Finally, the wine undergoes 18 months of aging in these same barrels, before resting for an additional four months in bottle.
Grape variety
100% Nebbiolo.
