Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

On the lighter side, featuring tea, damson plum, blood orange and sandalwood notes mixed with a hint of savory through the finish. Pretty and ready to drink. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2024. 16,666 cases made.

Decanter

Ripe bramble aromas with some herbal tones and touches of chocolate and violet. Quite a serious, taut style, yet for the medium term.

James Lawther MW

50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot. Cask sample. Juicy and succulent with firm but polished tannins. Acidity present. Slightly hard and austere on the finish. (JL)

With loads of dark, red berries and spice box notes, the wine is round and the texture has softness and flesh.

Dark ruby garnet, purple reflections, subtle edge brightening, fine blackberry confit, ripe plums, a hint of precious wood and orange zest, nuances of strawberry confit in the background. Juicy cherry fruit, red berry nuances, mineral and fresh structure, rather lightweight, charming, already easy to drink, a refined food wine.

Dark ruby with sparkling highlights. Fragrant red currants, followed by ripe raspberries and violet. On the mid-palate, a dense extract and a finely sandy texture. The finish is lively with sour cherry juice. Selection takes place in the vineyard, i.e., the plots are precisely defined in advance.

Kunz barrel sample 18: (56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot, 12.5% vol. alcohol, 30% new barrique) Delicately floral, fruity bouquet with blackberry, cassis, tobacco, dark chocolate. Balanced, medium-bodied palate with fine-grained, silky tannins, good sweet fruit, velvety texture, and a subtly bitter finish.

The Wine Independent

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

The 2017 Pagodes de Cos is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. It rocks up with open-knit scents of crushed black plums, boysenberries, and kirsch, plus suggestions of fragrant soil, cinnamon toast, and dried herbs. Medium-bodied, the palate is juicy and plush, delivering compelling tension and a savory finish.

La RVF

Les Pagodes 2017 is also well poised, with plenty of charm and brilliance, both on the palate and on the finish.

Le Figaro Vin

A full-bodied, intense, juicy wine, vibrant and delicious, with round, silky tannins, elegant, and a fine, taut finish.

The nose is elegant, offering minerality, fine concentration and a refined power. This wine needs decanting. It reveals notes of ripe blackberry, raspberry and, more subtly, blackcurrant, alongside delicate hints of violet/iris, racy minerality and discreet touches of sweet spices/tonka bean. The palate is fruity and balanced, with good definition, a generous feel, lovely juiciness, roundness, racy minerality, a very fine tangy thread of acidity, tension and a gentle creaminess. On the palate, the wine shows notes of small red berries and fleshy/juicy red cherry, joined by subtle touches of blackberry, rosewood, violet, as well as discreet hints of iris, tonka bean, toastiness and a subtle note of mocha/cocoa husk. A fine firmness and tension on the finish/through the persistence.

Dark color of medium intensity. Fruity nose with a slightly lively touch. Very fruity on the palate, developing on a soft, flavorful body; pleasant evolution, a little discreet in length.

Wine Enthusiast

This wine has velvet tannins and lusciously ripe black fruits. Despite the tannins, the it is more about fruit and ripeness than about structure. Drink 2022.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

A blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, this second wine accounts for about 55% of production. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Les Pagodes de Cos sashays out of the glass with youthful, presumptuous notes of Black Forest cake, raspberry preserves, cassis and spice cake with nuances of lavender, chocolate box, anise and underbrush. Medium-bodied, the palate has wonderful elegance and precision, with a very finely grained frame and seamless freshness supporting the soft-spoken red and black fruits, finishing with a quiet intensity.

Vinous

Antonio Galloni

The 2017 Les Pagodes de Cos is dark, supple and wonderfully inviting. Dark plum, chocolate, new leather, licorice, spice and earthy tones give the Pagodes a decidedly somber, dark feel. Plush fruit and ripe, silky tannins add to the wine's sensual, inviting personality.

Grilled and smoked aromatics on the opening, this has skilful construction, no question that the austerity is more marked than in recent years of this beautiful wine, but they have teased out cassis bud and rose petals, touch of mint leaf and bitter chocolate. Harvest September 23 to October 7, 54% of overall production. New label and bottle for this vintage to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Pagodes. 29hl/h yield.

What a bouquet! Marked by floral notes and the freshness of red berries, with hints of eucalyptus. On the palate, the wine is slightly creamy and deliciously moreish. It faithfully reflects the aromatic profile and offers elegant, fine-grained tannins that are perfectly integrated. The finish is refreshing, fruity, and persistent. A wine that deserves cellaring and already hints at the greatness of the first wine.

Description

A Charming and Vivacious Saint-Estèphe

Created in 1994, Pagodes de Cos has already established itself as one of the most emblematic Second wines of the Left Bank of the Bordeaux region. Born from a unique terroir, it symbolises all the charm and generosity of great Saint-Estèphe wines with a subtle balance between softness and liveliness.

A vintage of contrasts and challenges, the frost at the end of April 2017 spared the superb terroir of the fabulous Château Cos d’Estournel. The 2017 vintage was put together gradually with plenty of attention paid to the vine at every moment. A flawless knowledge of the plots, combined with the experience and know-how of the technical teams and extremely precise vinifications resulted in a very accomplished Pagoda 2017 by Cos d'Estournel.

Consisting of a typically Medoc blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (56%), Merlot (42%), Cabernet Franc (1%) and Petit Verdot (1%), the Pagodes de Cos d'Estournel 2017 impresses with its roundness and freshness, displaying the authentic identity of its vintage.

The aromatic bouquet shows great intensity, revealing brilliant fruit aromas. Enhanced greatly by the purity of the fruit, the palate offers a succession of tasty sensations and reveals a generous and velvety texture. Soft, lively and full-bodied, the Pagodes de Cos d'Estournel 2017 is one of the great achievements of this vintage.
