Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Terre di San Leonardo 2023
Tasting Notes
Colour
This Terre di San Leonardo shows a brilliant, limpid ruby-red colour with violet highlights in its youth.
Nose
The bouquet is broad and complex, blending red and black fruit aromas such as raspberry and black cherry. Subtle herbaceous and balsamic notes intertwine with touches of peppery spice, delicate minerality and discreet oak.
Palate
Supple and elegant, the palate offers a creamy texture supported by ripe tannins and subtle acidity. Juicy fruit flavours are perfectly balanced before stretching into a persistent finish, marked by a pleasant, light bitterness.
Food and Wine Pairing
This wine pairs wonderfully with traditional Italian dishes such as a red wine risotto, pasta with meat ragù or a tomato-based sauce. It also goes very well with grilled red meats, poultry in sauce, and moderately aged semi-firm mountain cheeses.
Serving and Cellaring
With its fine structure, this Terre di San Leonardo 2023 can be enjoyed now, but will continue to improve in the cellar and can be enjoyed until 2031 at the very least.
The Authentic Expression of a Great Terroir in Trentino-Alto Adige
The Estate
A former medieval monastery located in Trentino-Alto Adige, Tenuta San Leonardo has a documented winemaking history dating back to 1724. Today run by Anselmo, representing the Guerrieri Gonzaga family, who have owned the estate since the late 19th century, the property stands out for its environmental commitment. Certified organic and recognised for its biodiversity, the estate produces Bordeaux-inspired cuvées that faithfully reflect their Alpine terroir, establishing itself as an essential reference in the Italian wine landscape.
The Vineyard
Classified under the Vigneti delle Dolomiti designation, the vineyard thrives in the Vallagarina, a natural corridor sheltered by the mountains and softened by the influence of Lake Garda. The vines, aged between 3 and 25 years, are planted at altitudes ranging from 120 to 300 metres. The light, sandy soils are ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon and Carménère, while the clayier, well-drained terroirs are devoted to Merlot.
Vinification and Ageing
Vinification begins with spontaneous fermentation in small concrete tanks, accompanied by a 12 to 15-day maceration with frequent pump-overs. After malolactic fermentation in the same vessels, the wine is aged for around twelve months. This ageing is divided between concrete tanks and second- and third-fill French oak barriques or barrels, thus preserving the brightness of the fruit.
Grape Varieties
50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 10% Carménère
