Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Moulin-à-Vent Vieilles Vignes 2023 by Thibault Liger-Belair
Tasting
Colour
This Moulin-à-Vent Vieilles Vignes 2023 reveals a deep colour, in keeping with the vintages of this cuvée made from the estate's old vines.
Nose
The nose opens with aromas of ripe dark fruit, at times jammy, evoking date and prune, accompanied by spicy notes and a light herbaceous touch.
Palate
The palate is full-bodied without heaviness, carried by melting tannins and a fine concentration of fruit. The finish is marked by a mineral freshness characteristic of the appellation's granitic soils.
Food and Wine Pairing
This wine pairs ideally with white meats such as chicken or turkey, whose delicate texture matches the balance of power and elegance in Gamay.
An Old-Vine Moulin-à-Vent Marked by the Freshness of Granite
The Estate
Domaine des Pierres Roses was founded in 2008 by Thibault Liger-Belair, a Burgundian winemaker from Nuits-Saint-Georges, who chose to extend his terroir-driven approach to the Moulin-à-Vent appellation in Beaujolais. Now run by Thibault Liger-Belair, the estate spans thirteen hectares divided among six lieux-dits, planted with vines that are sometimes a century old and farmed organically and biodynamically. This Beaujolais estate applies a parcel-by-parcel approach inspired by the winemaker's Burgundian methods.
The Vineyard
The Vieilles Vignes cuvée is made from a blend of nine parcels covering seven hectares, located around the Moulin-à-Vent hill. The vines, planted between 1910 and 1955, grow in shallow soils of white and pink sand resulting from the decomposition of pink granite and quartz, with a predominantly south-easterly exposure. The entire vineyard is farmed organically and biodynamically.
Winemaking and Ageing
This Moulin-à-Vent Vieilles Vignes 2023 is made from hand-harvested grapes, with 40% whole bunches. Fermentation takes place in open vats over three weeks, with a gentle extraction designed to preserve the freshness of the fruit. Ageing continues for fifteen months in oak foudres, a vessel that promotes slow oxygenation without marking the wine excessively with oaky notes.
Grape Variety
100% Gamay.
