Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of Torres Secret del Priorat 2023

Tasting notes

Appearance
Deep ruby robe, both bright and particularly appealing.

Nose
Elegant and highly expressive, it reveals luscious aromas of fig jam intertwined with spicy notes of clove. The whole is underpinned by a delicately toasted background and a subtle hint of orange zest.

Palate
Flavourful and generous, it offers a superb balance thanks to a finely tuned acidity.

Food and wine pairings
This red wine pairs beautifully with grilled meats, dishes served with pepper sauce or enhanced by aromatic herbs such as thyme and rosemary. It also complements recipes featuring aubergines as well as semi-hard cheeses.

Serving and cellaring
It is recommended to serve this wine at a temperature between 14 and 16ºC. With fine ageing potential, it can be kept in the cellar and enjoyed until around 2033.

The authentic expression of Priorat terroir by Familia Torres

The estate
Founded in 1870 in Vilafranca del Penedès, the Familia Torres bodega is a true institution in Catalonia. Although its winegrowing roots date back to 1559, it was at the end of the 19th century that the company truly took off. Now led by Miguel A. Torres as chairman and Miguel Torres Maczassek as managing director, the house works around one thousand hectares of certified organic vines. Renowned worldwide, this prestigious brand stands out for its pioneering commitment to regenerative viticulture and climate action.

The vineyard
The grapes come from a mosaic of plots spread across six municipalities within the Priorat appellation. The vines are planted on steep slopes, known as costers, made up of the region's typical shallow soils of carboniferous schist, the famous llicorella. This singular terroir is characterised by rapid drainage and very low water retention, providing demanding conditions that promote concentration in the berries.

The vintage
The 2023 year was marked by temperatures above the usual averages, with an annual temperature of 16.2ºC and heatwave episodes in July and August. Rainfall was particularly scarce, totalling only 320 mm over the year, representing a water deficit of 40%. These hot and dry conditions led to an early and even ripening of the grapes.

Winemaking and ageing
To craft this wine, the harvest undergoes a skin maceration of 10 to 12 days. Alcoholic fermentation then takes place in stainless steel tanks for 7 to 8 days, at a controlled temperature between 25 and 26ºC. Finally, the wine benefits from 12 months of ageing in second-use French oak barrels.

Grape varieties
This blend is composed of Garnacha, Cariñena, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.
