Description
Characteristics and tasting advice for the Lirac 2022 by Xavier Vignon
Tasting
Appearance
This French wine reveals a deep red color, enhanced by delicate garnet highlights.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with intense notes of black and red fruits, such as black cherry, plum, and raspberry. Subtle hints of spice follow, along with aromas of garrigue herbs and light woody nuances.
Palate
Generous and clear, the palate offers supple tannins and a fine acidity that perfectly balances the whole. The finish shows a very pleasant medium length, without any heaviness.
Food and wine pairings
Ideal with flavorful dishes, this red wine pairs wonderfully with a lamb tagine with dried fruits, a fine cut of beef in crust, or rich vegetable-based preparations such as a spinach, mustard, and walnut flan.
Service and cellaring
For optimal tasting, it is recommended to serve this Lirac 2022 at a temperature between 57 and 59°F. Approachable in its youth, it will continue to develop complexity and can be cellared until around 2027.
The singular expression of a Lirac terroir by Xavier Vignon
The estate
Founded in 2002 in the Vallée du Rhône, this creative négociant house is still led today by its eponymous founder, Xavier Vignon. A former geology researcher and consulting oenologist, he has revolutionized the region’s winemaking approach by combining scientific rigor with respect for terroirs. Drawing on his experience with hundreds of estates since 1996, the current owner crafts cuvées that highlight minerality and purity of fruit. Now marketed under his own name, his wines embody a forward-thinking vision and a deep understanding of Rhône soils.
The vineyard
This Lirac wine comes from a meticulous selection of fifteen plots located at the heart of the appellation, in the Gard department. This southern cru benefits from a unique environment where the vines coexist with vast forested areas, promoting excellent air circulation. The vines grow on soils composed of clay and rolled pebbles, geological features specifically chosen for their strong mineral potential. Bush vine pruning is favored to protect the grapes from the sun and preserve freshness.
The vintage
The year 2022 was marked by extreme climatic conditions in the region, with intense heat, pronounced drought, and a few very localized hail episodes. This particularly sunny climate led to a high concentration within the berries. However, careful canopy management helped preserve natural acidity and balance in the grapes despite these scorching temperatures.
Winemaking and aging
The harvest for this Lirac 2022 is carried out manually, with picking dates determined through daily analysis of polyphenols. In the cellar, fermentation takes place at moderate temperatures to gently extract aromas, using only free-run juice obtained by gravity, without any pressing. Aging is then adapted to each variety: all of the grenache, the mourvèdre, and a large portion of the syrah are matured in concrete tanks to preserve fruit purity. The remaining 30% of syrah is aged for twelve months in unheated oak barrels from the Vosges and Allier forests.
Grape varieties
This wine is a blend of 60% grenache, 30% syrah, and 10% mourvèdre.
