Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for Yann Chave's Crozes-Hermitage "Tradition" 2022
Tasting notes
Colour
The colour reveals a ruby red hue of medium intensity, with violet and purple hints.
Nose
The nose opens with floral aromas of violet and lavender, followed by a core of black fruits such as black cherry. Notes of pepper, spice and white tea mingle with a mineral touch. On aeration, hints of graphite and roasted meat emerge.
Palate
The palate offers a silky, refined texture, supported by lovely acidity. It unfolds flavours of black raspberry, plum and cherry, wrapped in fine, delicate tannins. The finish is long, balanced and marked by a saline minerality.
Food and wine pairing
This red wine pairs perfectly with meats such as roast lamb, beef or duck. It also goes very well with mushroom-based dishes, such as a risotto, or meaty fish like seared tuna.
Service and storage
To fully appreciate this "Tradition" 2022, decanting for one to two hours before serving is recommended. This wine can be enjoyed now and will continue to evolve favourably until around 2035, provided it is stored lying down in a cool, dark cellar.
The authentic expression of a Crozes-Hermitage wine
The estate
Located in France, in the Rhône Valley, the estate was founded in 1970 by Nicole and Bernard Chave. Initially devoted to mixed farming, the property turned fully to winegrowing with its first independent vinifications in the late 1970s. Today, Yann Chave is the owner and winemaker of the estate, which spans around twenty hectares. A pioneer in the region, he led the estate towards organic certification in 2007. The estate is currently preparing a family transition with the arrival of the new generation.
The vineyard
The plots dedicated to this cuvée are located in the communes of Mercurol, La Roche-de-Glun and Pont-de-l'Isère, within the Crozes-Hermitage appellation. The terroir is made up of granitic bedrock and loess soils. The vineyard benefits from a semi-continental climate and the influence of the mistral, a northerly wind that promotes good vine health. All the land is cultivated according to organic farming principles.
The vintage
2022 was marked by hot, dry weather conditions. This climate allowed the grapes to reach optimal physiological ripeness at harvest.
Winemaking and aging
For the "Tradition" 2022 cuvée, the grapes are fully destemmed before fermentation begins. This takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures not exceeding 28 degrees. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is separated from its lees. Aging then continues in stainless steel tanks for around ten months before bottling, with no oak ageing at all, in order to preserve the expression of the fruit.
Grape variety
Syrah.
