Decanter

Gorgeously aromatic and concentrated nose, rich with wild flowers and bramble fruits. Lovely cool blue fruits on the palate—blueberries, plums and black cherries—with lashings of graphite, slate and liquorice giving a real spicy, menthol, mineral tone to the palate. Such complexity with poise and polish. Youthful for sure, but this will be excellent. The texture is so attractive and likeable. This has energy and vibrancy despite still being tightly knit; it’s just giving a hint of what’s to come. Buy and hold.

James Suckling

Blackberries and dark chocolate with licorice and berry highlights. Flowers and crushed stones, too. It’s medium- to full-bodied with firm, creamy tannins and a flavorful finish. Plenty going on here. Very subtle and refined for this estate. Needs two or three years to come together. Try after 2024.

Antonio Galloni

The 2019 Beauséjour Héritiers Duffau-Lagarrosse opens with good intensity, but its persistence trails off on the mid-palate and finish. I don't see the energy and vibrancy that are such signatures and that were quite present en primeur. Ultimately, the 2019 feels rather hollow on both the mid-palate and finish. Tasted two times.

Bettane+Desseauve

A subtle entry on the palate, worthy of a premier cru thanks to its silky tannins and delicate juiciness. It has that limestone texture that defines a very refined finish. Intense and long, brilliant and refined, it’s a top priority for the enthusiast.

Le Figaro Vin

An inviting nose with discreet opulence, drawing you in to discover its mysterious, floral fragrance. Delightful on the palate, with a controlled burst of saline and mineral flavors.

The estate changed hands during the ageing of this wine. Dark, intense, beautiful color. Intense nose with ripe fruit and a touch of oak. While the attack is delicate and the texture caressing through the mid-palate, the finish turns austere due to the oak. Medium length.

Elegant, fresh, deep, long, and packed with crushed rock and stone elements, the wine is all about its mineral essence. Salty tannins on the back end of all the sweet, ripe, energetic black cherries, plums, and black raspberries add further complexity along the way. Full-bodied, intense, and rich, it finishes with loads of dark red fruits, licorice, coffee bean, spice, and cocoa. Give it a few years in the cellar before pulling a cork, and it could score even higher once matured. Drink from 2026–2050.

Description

The freshness and precision of a Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé

The estate
Château Beauséjour has been famous from the very beginning of the Saint-Émilion classification. This Premier Grand Cru Classé, located on the right bank of Bordeaux, has been a family property since 1847, owned by the Duffau-Lagarosse family.

The vineyard
This 7-hectare gem is rooted on the hillside of Saint-Emilion. The 40-year-old vines are planted in a mosaic of terroirs, formed of clay-limestone soils on limestone. The vineyard is managed according to traditional methods and most often cultivated manually.

The harvest
Manual harvest of Merlot by successive sorting between September 24 and October 4. Harvest of Cabernet between October 4 and 7.

The blend
Merlot (86%), cabernet franc (14%).

The tasting
Airy and precise, the Château Beauséjour Héritiers Duffau-Lagarrosse 2019 presents a lace-like structure. Throughout its development on the palate, the lively acidity brings a great relief with beautiful bitter touches on the finish.
