Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Mercurey Village "En Pierrelet" 2022 Château de Chamirey
Tasting
Colour
The colour reveals an intense golden-yellow hue, subtly shot through with greenish glints.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with a lovely generosity of white-fleshed fruits such as peach and pear, complemented by floral notes of jasmine and honeysuckle. A pronounced minerality, reminiscent of flint, mingles with soft spicy touches of vanilla, cinnamon and lightly toasted brioche.
Palate
The palate offers a full, enveloping texture, perfectly balanced by lovely freshness and a saline minerality. Well-integrated acidity structures the whole with precision, leading to a lingering finish underscored by nuances of ginger and sweet spices.
Food and Wine Pairing
This white wine pairs perfectly with grilled salmon, mushroom risotto or a matured cheese such as Comté. It is also a wonderful match for white fish dishes, such as loin of cod or marinated sea bream.
Service and Storage
To reveal its full aromatic palette, it is recommended to serve the Mercurey Village "En Pierrelet" 2022 at a temperature of between 12 and 14°C. Blessed with fine ageing potential, this wine can be cellared until around 2029.
The Mineral, Generous Expression of a White Wine from Mercurey
The Estate
Built at the beginning of the 18th century, Château de Chamirey overlooks the landscapes of the Côte Chalonnaise in Burgundy. Although the estate's winemaking origins go back a long way, its commercial history truly began in 1934, when the Marquis de Jouennes decided to bottle his own wines. Today, Amaury and Aurore Devillard, representing the fifth generation, head up this 38-hectare estate. Boasting a rich heritage that includes numerous Premiers Crus, the estate distinguishes itself through an approach combining respect for tradition with modernity, in order to reveal the authenticity of its terroirs.
The Vineyard
The En Pierrelet climat is an iconic plot located just behind the château, at the heart of the Mercurey appellation. Planted in 1990 and facing south-east, the vines benefit from optimal sun exposure. The terroir is distinguished by clay-limestone soil covered with an impressive concentration of small white stones, giving the wine its mineral signature. Although the plot covers nearly three hectares, only around one hectare is rigorously selected for the production of this cuvée, with a traditionally high planting density encouraging berry concentration.
The Vintage
2022 was marked by a particularly hot and dry growing season. The lack of rainfall between budburst and harvest was fortunately offset by welcome storms in June. These contrasting weather conditions allowed the berries to reach optimal ripeness while preserving excellent health, giving rise to white wines that are round and full-bodied, yet with lovely freshness.
Winemaking and Aging
The grapes for the Mercurey Village "En Pierrelet" 2022 are harvested by hand, followed by careful sorting. Whole-cluster pneumatic pressing allows for gentle juice extraction. After an overnight cold settling period in tank, the must is transferred by gravity, without pumping, to preserve its integrity. Fermentation and ageing take place over 12 months in lightly toasted 400-litre French oak barrels, with full malolactic fermentation. The wine is then refined for 4 months in stainless steel tanks before bottling.
