Château Siran 2017

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Siran features pure cassis, crushed black plums and black cherries with hints of black olives, lavender and fragrant earth. The palate is medium-bodied, firm and grainy with a muscular core and good length.

Features alluring black cherry and plum purée flavors gliding through, inlaid with subtle alder, lilac and black tea notes. Perfumy and velvety, with a suave finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2030. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 7,500 cases made.

This is rather lovely, with excellent aromatics and fine tannins, giving a sense of flex and precision. There is no question that the fruit has structure and density, with focused cassis and tobacco notes and a touch of slate. It also has impressive length on the palate. The fruit is at the fresher end of the spectrum, as is true for most wines in 2017, but it is clearly successful. Hubert de Boüard is a consultant at this estate, owned by Edouard Miailhe, with winemaker Marjolaine DeFrance. There was no frost here, and the season was two weeks ahead of normal. Harvested from 19 September to 5 October.

A tight, linear 2017 with compact fruit and seamless tannins that show length and beauty. Medium to full body. Lovely finish. Drinkable now, but better in 2021 and onwards.

The 2017 Siran, a year where this Margaux estate escaped frost damage, has a pleasant, unassuming bouquet with brambly red berry fruit, cedar and light rose petal aromas, quite “transparent” and open. The palate is medium-bodied with a piquant entry. This Siran is a little coarse at the moment but the edges will smooth out over time. This is a pretty Margaux to enjoy over the next decade or two.

Cherry blossom, licorice, espresso and ripe plums get the medium-bodied wine off to a good start. It’s the blend of sweet red fruits, soft, polished tannins and acidity that creates the personality. You’ll be able to enjoy this while waiting for the 2015 and 2016 to mature. The wine was made from blending 46% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Petit Verdot. The harvest took place from September 18 to October 5 and the wine reached 13.5% ABV.

Silky and softly structured with white truffle, blackberry, loganberry, and fine tannins. This lifts gently through the mid-palate, unfussy with layers of smoky complexity, and a touch of rose bud, raspberry leaf and smoked earth, suggesting things are skirting full ripeness but skilfully handled and well balanced. Made from 46% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 9% Petit Verdot, the 2017 Siran was aged for 12 months in French oak, 35% new. Medium garnet colored, it delivers bright, cheery notes of Morello cherries, black raspberries, and roses with hints of iron ore, wild sage, and tilled soil. Medium-bodied, the palate is soft and elegant with a good amount of red berry flavors and a soft-spoken finish.

Highly elegant nose, with a more Cabernet-leaning balance than in the past; fresh, complex, racy, one to watch closely, and the price remains accessible. Tasted three times.

Juicy, fresh and moreish wine, fruity, with good sap, a pleasing chew, a hint of graphite, broad tannins that are still a bit tight, and a long finish.

A fine symbiosis between the freshness of Cabernet and the charm of Merlot. The bouquet reveals spicy nuances complemented by pleasant notes of blackberry. Silky and slightly creamy, the wine is well supported by its structure. Its velvety character ensures elegance and approachability.

This luscious, ripe wine is both balanced and generous. Acidity comes from the freshness of the vintage, bringing out fruitiness to complement the tannins. The wine will develop well. Drink from 2023.
