Description
A delicate and structured great red wine from Rioja
The estate
Founded in 1886, Bodega Gómez Cruzado is one of the oldest wineries in La Rioja. Located near Haro, the capital of Rioja Alta, this family-owned bodega produces wines renowned for their great finesse. Crafted by the winemaking duo David González and Juan Antonio Leza, the wines of Bodega Gómez Cruzado reveal the full typicity of their grape varieties and the authenticity of the terroirs of this wine region, home to some of the most iconic Spanish wines.
The vineyard
Bodega Gomez Cruzado tends 3 vineyards located between 500 and 750 metres above sea level. While the Atlantic climate brings freshness and elegance on the palate, the Mediterranean influence shows through in wines with delicious notes of fully ripe fruit and excellent ageing potential.
The wine
Cerro Las Cuevas 2017 from Bodega Gómez Cruzado is a Rioja wine made from a selection of plots near the village of Ollauri, in the Rioja Alavesa area. These 90-year-old vines grow on limestone soils with a stony surface.
The vintage
A mild, dry winter encouraged early budburst. The frost of 28 April struck a large part of the vineyard, leading to a significant drop in yields. These challenging conditions were compounded by a particularly dry summer. The teams' meticulous work to preserve freshness proved decisive. Despite the low yields, the harvested grapes were of outstanding quality, producing fragrant, well-balanced wines.
Vinification and ageing
The hand-harvested grapes undergo a rigorous selection in the cellar before being vinified in stainless steel tanks. Gentle extraction, followed by alcoholic and then malolactic fermentation. Ageing in French oak foudres.
Blend
Cerro Las Cuevas 2017 from Bodega Gómez Cruzado is a blend of Tempranillo (80%), Graciano (12%), Mazuelo (3%) and Garnacha (5%).
Tasting notes
Cerro Las Cuevas 2017 from Bodega Gómez Cruzado is the perfect expression of its terroir, whose poor limestone soils impart remarkable breadth and a distinctive tannic structure.
