Jancis Robinson

Tamlyn Currin

Cask sample. More fruit than I was expecting: Seville orange, cherry candy, tart raspberry. A little necklet of tiny flowers. Lovely tart shards glinting through the sweetness; an underlay of truffle and autumn-leaf loam. A wine that stratifies delicacy with full-on charm, earth-rooted grunt with wood-spiced ambition. (TC)

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Gevrey-Chambertin 1er cru "Clos Prieur" 2023 Joseph Drouhin

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals a beautiful deep garnet hue.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet exhales intense notes of candied black fruits.

Palate
The palate reveals flavours of morello cherry delicately underscored by hints of vanilla. The tannic structure, tender and silky, accompanies a finish of very fine persistence.

Food and wine pairing

This wine pairs beautifully with characterful meats such as game birds, prime rib of beef, braised meats in sauce, or lamb. It also goes wonderfully with hard or semi-hard cow's milk cheeses such as Époisses, as well as bolder dishes like tuna fillet in a red wine sauce.

Service and storage

For optimal enjoyment, this Gevrey-Chambertin 1er cru "Clos Prieur" 2023 is best served at a temperature of 16°C. This wine can be enjoyed after a few years in the cellar and will continue to evolve favourably, drinking well until around 2048.

Other characteristics

This red wine from France illustrates all the typicity and elegance of its appellation.

The biodynamic expression of a historic house in Burgundy

The estate

Founded in 1880 in Beaune, Maison Joseph Drouhin is a true institution in Burgundy. A pioneer in environmental approach, it stands out for its early commitment to organic and biodynamic farming, becoming one of the major players in this style of viticulture in the region. Today, the fourth generation runs the estate, with Frédéric Drouhin at the helm, alongside Véronique, Philippe and Laurent. With a vineyard spanning around a hundred hectares, the estate carries on a family expertise focused on respect for the terroir and finesse in its wines.

The vineyard

The Clos Prieur plot is located south of the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, in close proximity to terroirs classified as Grand Cru. Historically linked to the Priors of Cluny, this vineyard sits on deep, compact marl soils. The vines, around 70 years old, draw from this terroir rich in minerals and limestone to yield grapes of great complexity.

The vintage

2023 ranks among the warmest years on record in the region. Mild weather conditions allowed for a generous and high-quality harvest. This favourable climate encouraged optimal ripeness in the berries, giving rise to smooth, long wines with a beautiful aromatic palette of ripe fruit.

Winemaking and ageing

Hand-harvested grapes in perforated crates undergo a rigorous sorting process. The winemaking of the Gevrey-Chambertin 1er cru "Clos Prieur" 2023 incorporates a proportion of 20 to 50% whole clusters. Fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts in small open vats over two to three weeks, punctuated by punching down and pumping over. After gentle vertical pressing, the wine is aged for 14 to 18 months in French oak barrels, a quarter of which are new.
