Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for the Condrieu 2023 Les Alexandrins
Tasting notes
Colour
With a brilliant golden hue, this white wine is enhanced by luminous golden highlights.
Nose
Refined and restrained, the bouquet reveals an elegant, perfectly integrated oak character, punctuated by delicate smoky notes. It also opens onto enticing aromas of spiced pear, peanut butter and sweet spices.
Palate
Voluptuous and unctuous, the palate offers superb volume balanced by remarkable freshness. It unfolds a rich aromatic palette blending white peach skin, dried apricot and candied citrus, enhanced with touches of mango and pineapple. The finish, of exceptional length, reveals great complexity with a mineral, saline structure.
Food and wine pairing
Ideal with seafood such as crayfish or prawns, this wine also pairs wonderfully with spicy dishes such as chicken curry. It will also enhance a medium-cooked foie gras, white fish in creamy sauce, or mature goat cheeses.
Service and storage
To fully appreciate this 2023 vintage, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 10 and 12°C. This wine can be enjoyed now and will continue to evolve favourably until around 2027.
The balance and richness of a Condrieu white wine
The estate
Founded in 2009 by Alexandre Caso and Guillaume Sorrel, the Les Alexandrins estate has established itself as a benchmark in the northern Rhône Valley, in France. In 2012, Nicolas Jaboulet joined the venture, bringing his family heritage, before taking over management of the estate in 2015. Today, Nicolas Jaboulet runs the estate, while Alexandre Caso oversees the vineyard. Cultivating excellence through a micro-négoce approach and organically farmed vines, the estate crafts cuvées that reflect the purity of the Rhône terroirs.
The vineyard
This Condrieu comes from an exceptional plot called La Caille, overlooking the eponymous village. This rare terroir stands out for its steep slopes and complex granitic soils, forcing the vines' roots to draw their nutrients from deep within the earth. Farmed according to the principles of organic agriculture, this vineyard benefits from traditional methods that encourage biodiversity and the authentic expression of the terroir.
The vintage
The year 2023 began with a particularly dry winter and early spring. Timely rains in May and June allowed for good vegetative growth. Summer was marked by a hailstorm at the end of July, followed by an intense heatwave in August, which temporarily halted ripening. Fortunately, rainfall at the end of August revived the cycle, allowing optimal ripeness to be reached before a very rainy September.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes are harvested by hand, just before full ripeness in order to preserve good acidity. The berries are quickly transported to the winery to avoid any oxidation. Fermentation takes place slowly and at low temperature in 600-litre oak demi-muids as well as in smaller barrels. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation in these same wooden vessels, where it continues aging to develop its full richness and texture.
Grape variety
100% Viognier.
