The Elegance and Structure of a Great Red Pommard Wine by Louis Latour
The Estate
Officially founded in 1797, the House of Louis Latour is an emblematic figure in Burgundy. This family estate, now run by Florent Latour, oversees an exceptional 48-hectare vineyard. Historically established in Aloxe-Corton, the estate stands out for its long-standing commitment to certified sustainable farming, as well as for owning its own artisanal cooperage. From the Côte de Nuits to the Côte de Beaune, the house produces wines of France renowned worldwide for their quality and their faithfulness to terroir.
The Vineyard
This wine comes from the largest of the premier crus in Pommard, located in the southeast of the appellation, toward Beaune. The vines, averaging 30 years of age, thrive on a gently sloping terroir composed of clay-limestone soils. Once covered with thorny bushes that gave it its name, this ageworthy terroir allows the grapes to express remarkable power and tannic structure.
The Vintage
The year 2023 stands out as one of the warmest on record in the region, delivering a generous and high-quality harvest. Weather conditions favoured excellent berry ripeness. Across the appellation, however, variations in ripening called for rigorous sorting of the bunches during the manual harvest, ensuring only the finest fruit was retained.
Winemaking and Ageing
The making of the Pommard 1er Cru "Epenots" 2023 begins with traditional fermentation in open vats, accompanied by complete malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged for 10 to 12 months in medium-toast French oak barrels, 35% of which are new. These barrels are meticulously crafted by the house's in-house cooperage.
