Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Jeb Dunnuck

The 2015 St Joseph Les Granilites Blanc (100% Marsanne) was brought up in equal parts demi-muids and stainless steel. It has lots of apple blossom, white peach and citrus, as well as a salty minerality that comes out with time in the glass. Another one of those “best vintage to date” releases, this medium-bodied, nicely concentrated beauty will keep for at least 4-5 years, and possibly even longer.

Pale-medium lemon. Ripe apple, lime and fleshy white-peach fruit. Rich nose, with some waxy-nutty tones. Fairly full-bodied, with flinty, salty mineral, some nuttiness and honey to white peach. Medium-long. (TJ)

La RVF

Golden-yellow color, with a nose offering a demonstrative aromatic palette. The style is ripe, with a rather broad, rounded palate, but the wine’s core is deep, with a structure more taut than the Deschants cuvée.

The authentic expression of a granitic Saint-Joseph terroir by M. Chapoutier

The estate

Officially founded in 1808, M. Chapoutier is a true institution of the Rhône Valley, historically based in Tain-l'Hermitage. Now led by the visionary Michel Chapoutier, joined by the new generation, Mathilde and Maxime, the estate stands out for its innovative approach and pioneering commitment to biodynamic viticulture since the 1990s. With a vineyard that now extends internationally, the estate strives to reveal the most accurate depiction of each terroir, while upholding strong values of inclusion and environmental respect.

The vineyard

The grapes for this cuvée come from the Saint-Joseph appellation, from plots ideally exposed to the southeast. This unique terroir is characterized by filtering, limiting granitic soils, formed through geological weathering and wind-blown deposits. The altitude and the influence of wind, particularly the mistral, ensure constant summer freshness and naturally regulate pests. The vineyard is managed according to strict biodynamic principles, promoting a pure, mineral expression of the vine.

Winemaking and aging

To craft Saint-Joseph "Les Granilites" 2015, the harvest is carried out by hand under dry, sunny conditions. The whole clusters undergo direct pressing, followed by 48 hours of cold settling. Fermentation takes place using natural yeasts in 600-liter barrels. Aging lasts 8 months, with lees stirring during the first two months to limit oxidation. To preserve minerality and freshness, 75% of the wine is aged in stainless steel tanks, while the remaining 25% ages in demi-muids to bring power, consistency, and aromatic complexity.

Grape variety

100% Marsanne.
