The complexity and generosity of an Ermitage red wine

The estate

Established in Tain-L’Hermitage since 1808, the M. Chapoutier House now stands as one of the most prestigious names among the Rhône Valley wines.

Both winegrower and négociant, Michel Chapoutier has, over the vintages, brought this family business to excellence. The wines of Maison Chapoutier are praised for their finesse and exceptionally high level of quality by the most demanding enthusiasts, far beyond national borders. A key figure with many facets, Michel Chapoutier holds the world record for 100/100 scores awarded by American critic Robert Parker. His daughter Mathilde has taken over this emblematic house, overseeing a vineyard of more than 350 hectares spread across the most renowned appellations of the Rhône Valley, both north and south.

The vineyard

Les Greffieux by M. Chapoutier, named after the first owner of the parcel, is an Ermitage made from a single grape variety. Located at the foot of the Hermitage hill, the plot rests on a terrace of glacial alluvium. This terroir owes its uniqueness to a subsoil of deep clay, bringing finesse and aromatic richness to the wine, as well as to the presence of rounded pebbles that store heat and enhance concentration and structure.

The vintage

A vintage that began with a rather mild and very rainy winter, building good water reserves, followed by prolonged cold delaying bud break and reducing the risk of frost. Spring, alternating between rain and sunshine, led to strong vegetative growth and increased pressure on the vines, with early flowering but few grape clusters. Summer was marked by two heatwaves and a hail episode in Crozes-Hermitage, causing some losses. Harvests, early from mid-August, were spread out thanks to rains at the end of August which refined ripeness.

Winemaking and aging

Harvested at full maturity, the grapes are fully destemmed before vinification in concrete tanks. A long maceration is carried out to promote a gradual and gentle extraction of tannins. Only free-run juice is used. Aging, lasting 14 to 18 months, is carried out in barrels.

Blend

Syrah (100%).
