Description
A limited edition celebrating the 40th anniversary of a great Montepulciano d'Abruzzo estate
The estate
Since its creation, Masciarelli has told the story of great Italian wines. The estate was founded in 1981 by Gianni Masciarelli, a pioneer of the renaissance of viticulture in Abruzzo and of Italy’s new wine scene. Thanks to his talent and determination, he succeeded in turning the region’s two most important grape varieties, Trebbiano and Montepulciano, into world-renowned benchmarks of excellence. By combining rural tradition with the promotion of indigenous grape varieties, the estate demonstrates how local values can transcend borders through wine.
The vineyard
Located in the heart of Italy, in the Abruzzo region, Masciarelli is rooted in a most picturesque natural setting. From the rocky peaks of the Apennines to the blue of the Adriatic Sea, vineyards and olive groves stretch majestically across this terroir whose beauty has fascinated for centuries. There, the estate’s vineyard located in S. Martino and S. Marrucina sits at an altitude of 400 meters. Within the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC appellation, Masciarelli lavishes rigorous care on its vines, which are deeply rooted in clay-limestone soils.
The wine
To mark its 40th anniversary, the Italian estate Masciarelli pays tribute to the innovative, avant-garde vision of its founder, Gianni Masciarelli, by unveiling the Masciarelli Art Project for the first time.
Born from a collaboration with internationally renowned Belgian designer Job Smeets, this artistic project encompasses both the installation of a work entitled “The Harvest” within the Castello di Semivicoli, and the creation of an exclusive label for the 2015 vintage of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva Villa Gemma.
For over 30 years, this cuvée, offered in limited quantities with this dressing, has been one of the estate’s most emblematic. Entirely handcrafted, this label aims to combine contemporary style and modernism on a precious medium celebrating the estate’s history. Beyond its avant-garde design, this label stands out both for its shape, reminiscent of a boxing champion’s belt, and for the ring’s color code echoing that of a cigar. This inspiration reflects the tradition of lighting a cigar to celebrate a goal achieved. “Thus, at the end of the harvest, the Villa Gemma bottle becomes the affirmation of a new victory.” (Job Smeets)
The artwork is also available inside the case, accompanied by documentation about the history of this partnership (in Italian and English). Instructions are also provided on how to mount the work on its wooden support, making it a decorative object in its own right.
Vinification and aging
After hand harvesting at the end of October, the berries ferment for 15 to 20 days. Then, malolactic fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks. Finally, this Montepulciano d'Abruzzo wine ages for 12 to 24 months in barriques before spending an additional 2 to 3 years in bottle.
