Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon 2024
Tasting
Colour
The colour of the Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon 2024 is a deep red, reflecting the marked phenolic ripeness achieved in this vintage thanks to small, concentrated berries.
Nose
The nose expresses the varietal definition typical of Cabernet Sauvignon, carried by layers of ripe dark fruit, savoury complexity and a subtle touch of French and American oak, measured and well integrated.
Palate
On the palate, the wine is dry and full-bodied, supported by a firm structure and a savoury definition that convey great varietal purity, in keeping with the multi-regional style characteristic of Penfolds.
Food Pairings
This Cabernet Sauvignon will pair beautifully with roasted or grilled red meats, dishes in sauce and game preparations.
Serving and Cellaring
Sealed with a cork stopper, the Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon 2024 can be enjoyed from 2028 until around 2048, according to Penfolds' official guidance, a period during which it should reveal its full potential.
A Multi-Regional Cabernet Sauvignon from Southern Australia, Crafted by Penfolds
The Estate
Founded in 1844 by Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold at Magill Estate, near Adelaide, in the Southern Australia wine region, Penfolds has established itself as one of the most iconic houses in Australian viticulture. Now owned by Treasury Wine Estates, the house upholds a philosophy of multi-regional blending and age-worthy wines, embodied by its famous "Bin wines" range, of which the Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon is an accessible and typical expression of the grape variety.
The Vintage
The 2024 vintage saw a disrupted spring, with below-average winter rainfall that reduced soil moisture before budburst. Isolated heat episodes in mid-November affected fruit set in some areas, while late-November storms brought heavy rain and localised hail to Coonawarra and Wrattonbully. December rains then stabilised the canopy, ahead of a hot, dry phase from January to March, marked by heatwaves that favoured smaller, more concentrated berries. A cooler April allowed for measured harvest decisions, resulting in a Cabernet with a firm structure and pronounced varietal purity.
Winemaking and Ageing
The Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon 2024 is aged for twelve months in French and American oak hogsheads, comprising 16% new French oak, 36% used French oak, 5% new American oak and 43% American oak that has previously held several wines. This Australian wine is then bottled under cork.
Grape Variety
100% Cabernet Sauvignon.
