Tasting Notes and Serving Tips for the 2023 Malbec from Terrazas de los Andes
Tasting notes
Colour
Deep purple-red in hue, enhanced by brilliant violet highlights.
Nose
Complex and floral, the nose releases aromas of ripe black fruit (blackberry, black cherry) and fresh red fruit such as plum and strawberry. It then opens onto notes of violet, mountain herbs and black pepper, delicately underscored by vanilla and toasty touches from ageing.
Palate
Juicy and vibrant, the palate seduces with its creamy, velvety texture, supported by refined tannins. Beautifully fresh, it offers perfect balance leading to an elegant, persistent finish with fruity and spicy nuances.
Food and wine pairings
This Argentine red wine pairs wonderfully with grilled red meats, roast lamb or game. It is also an excellent match for mature hard cheeses, pasta with meat sauce or roasted mushrooms.
Serving and cellaring
Accessible now, this 2023 Malbec can be cellared and enjoyed until around 2033.
The elegance and freshness of an Argentine wine from Mendoza
The estate
Officially founded in 1996, Terrazas de los Andes is a pioneering estate located in the Mendoza region of Argentina. While its story began in 1993 under the impetus of the visionary Hervé Birnie-Scott, the estate now belongs to the LVMH group and is run by Lucas Löwi. Strongly committed to environmental responsibility, with regenerative organic certification, the estate stands out for its mastery of high-altitude terroirs. It produces wines renowned for their freshness and elegance, reflecting the purity of the mountains.
The vineyard
Stretching over more than 500 hectares in the province of Mendoza, the vineyard spreads across eight distinct high-altitude terroirs, perched between 1,070 and 1,650 metres in the Uco Valley and Luján de Cuyo. Soils vary from one plot to another, combining sand, silt, stones and limestone. Cultivated according to the principles of precision viticulture and certified regenerative organic, the vines coexist with rich biodiversity. The estate preserves 50% native vegetation and maintains biological corridors to protect this mountain ecosystem.
The vintage
The 2023 vintage was marked by warmer weather conditions than the previous two vintages. This favoured slightly greater ripeness in the berries, giving warmer fruit notes while preserving the typical characteristics of cool, high-altitude climates. To maintain optimal freshness, the grapes were harvested early, picked at an ideal stage of crispness.
Winemaking and ageing
The 2023 Malbec is crafted from a blend of more than a hundred plots. After destemming by gravity, maceration lasts 15 to 20 days with gentle pump-overs and punch-downs. Malolactic fermentation takes place naturally. Finally, the wine is aged for 12 to 14 months in French oak barrels (including 40% first-use barrels and 15% oak cubes), thereby preserving the brightness of the fruit.
