Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of the Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Cru "Sur la Roche" 2022 Verget
Tasting notes
Colour
This white wine reveals a golden hue, ranging from pale to medium, subtly enhanced by green tints typical of its youth. Over time, it will evolve towards deeper shades.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with notes of stone fruit, such as white peach and pear, combined with touches of citrus like lemon and grapefruit. Delicate floral nuances complete the ensemble, while a mineral backbone marked by flint, chalk and wet stone brings a lovely precision.
Palate
Blessed with generous body, the palate offers a beautiful balance supported by refreshing acidity. One finds the flavours of ripe peach and pear, carried by the minerality perceived on the nose. The finish, wonderfully persistent, extends with notes of citrus and minerals, enriched by a subtly buttery texture from its ageing on the lees.
Food and wine pairing
This wine pairs perfectly with fine seafood such as langoustine, lobster or crayfish. It also beautifully accompanies poultry in creamy mushroom sauce, dishes spiced with a touch of ginger or fresh herbs like tarragon, as well as goat cheese or light foie gras preparations.
Service and storage
The Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Cru "Sur la Roche" 2022 can be enjoyed now to appreciate its vibrant fruit, but it also has the structure necessary to evolve favourably during extended cellar ageing.
Other characteristics
This wine is bottled with an alternative closure of the DIAM or screwcap type, a technical choice embraced by the house to preserve the wine's freshness and reductive profile while avoiding defects associated with cork. It has also received a score of 92/100 from critics.
The mineral, balanced expression of a Premier Cru from the Mâconnais
The estate
Founded in 1990 by Jean-Marie Guffens and his wife Maine, the négociant house Verget was established in Sologny, in the heart of Burgundy, France. Created to compensate for the small size of their historic estate, this structure stands out for its uncompromising selection of grapes purchased on the vine. Named "Négociant of the Year" in 2020 by La RVF, Verget is now under the technical direction of Julien Desplans, who carries on the founder's vision. The estate is distinguished by its pursuit of authenticity and the true expression of its terroirs.
The vineyard
Elevated to Premier Cru status in November 2020, the terroir from which this Pouilly-Fuissé originates lies close to the iconic Roche de Vergisson, in the Mâconnais. Rising to nearly 400 metres in altitude, making it one of the highest plots in the appellation, the vineyard sits on shallow, well-drained soils. These are composed of iron-rich limestone and calcareous marls dating back to the Jurassic period, giving the wine its distinctive mineral signature.
The vintage
The year 2022 proved to be an excellent growing season across the Burgundy region. Favourable weather conditions throughout the growing cycle allowed the berries to reach optimal ripeness before harvest.
Winemaking and ageing
The making of the Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Cru "Sur la Roche" 2022 begins with manual harvesting carried out in several successive passes to pick each bunch at optimal ripeness. At the winery, pneumatic pressing is managed manually and gently to preserve the integrity of the seeds and the purity of the juice. Long, natural fermentations take place using indigenous yeasts. The ageing of this cuvée includes 25% new oak barrels, bringing a subtle complexity that blends harmoniously into the wine's mineral backbone.
Grape variety
Chardonnay (100%).
