Decanter

The entry-level Pouilly-Fuissé from Verget is a delight, with ripe apricot and quince fruit, floral notes and a hint of spice. The texture is rich but not heavy, with excellent balance and a supple feel. The grapes are fermented in barrel, 25% new, but the elevage is relatively short – six months in barrel and a further three in concrete before bottling. This will drink well on release.

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for the Pouilly-Fuissé Village "Terres de Pierres" 2024 Verget

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals a straw-yellow to pale gold hue, enhanced by subtle green highlights.

Nose
Precise and refreshing, the nose exudes aromas of fresh citrus (lemon, grapefruit) and green apple, underscored by a schistous minerality. Subtle floral touches of acacia and rockrose round out the bouquet.

Palate
The palate stands out for its pronounced minerality and its lively, saline acidity. With a silky, dense texture, it reveals flavours of ripe pear, golden apple and lemon, accompanied by notes of hazelnut and wet stone. The finish is long, linear and remarkably precise.

Food and wine pairing

This white wine pairs perfectly with fresh seafood such as oysters or grilled prawns, as well as with delicate white fish. It also goes wonderfully well with white poultry, pan-seared fresh salmon, or fresh goat cheeses and young pressed cheeses.

Service and storage

This Pouilly-Fuissé Village "Terres de Pierres" 2024 can be enjoyed now and will continue to evolve favourably until around 2034.

Other characteristics

This wine is bottled under screwcap, a deliberate choice by the producer to preserve freshness and avoid cork-related flaws. It is characterised by a low pH, which gives it its typical tension, and has no residual sugar.

The mineral expression and tension of a white wine from the Mâconnais

The estate

Founded in 1990 by Jean-Marie Guffens and his wife Maine, the négociant house Verget is located in Sologny, in the Mâconnais, south of Burgundy. Born from a desire to showcase sometimes-overlooked terroirs, the house sources its grapes from carefully selected partner winegrowers. Today, Jean-Marie Guffens remains the owner of the estate, while Julien Desplans, an oenologist who joined in 2006, has taken full responsibility for purchasing and winemaking since 2016. Verget stands out for its low-intervention approach and its unwavering pursuit of the terroir's authentic expression.

The vineyard

This Pouilly-Fuissé comes from distinctive plots in the Mâconnais, selected for their atypical exposures and altitude. The terroir, aptly named "Terres de Pierres", is characterised by complex soils made up of limestone and clay-rich rock, giving the wine its distinctive tension and mineral profile.

The vintage

The 2024 vintage benefited from a rather cool growing season. In the Mâconnais, April and May were notably drier than in the northern part of the region, while August proved particularly dry and sunny. Flowering was uneven, leading to lower yields than usual. These climatic conditions nonetheless allowed for the harvest of healthy, concentrated grapes.

Winemaking and aging

The grapes for this Pouilly-Fuissé Village "Terres de Pierres" 2024 are hand-harvested and undergo rigorous sorting. Pneumatic pressing is hand-controlled to extract the finest juice. Fermentation takes place naturally, in stainless steel tanks (70%) and used barrels (25%). Aging lasts around six months on the lees, without intensive stirring, to preserve the purity of the fruit. No new oak is used.

Grape variety

100% Chardonnay.
