James Suckling

Stuart Pigott

A very cool and crisp wine with juicy white tree fruit and very racy acidity on the sleek, light-bodied palate. Very precise and filigreed finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold.

Vinous

Anne Krebiehl, MW

The 2024 Riesling Oberhäuser Leistenberg Kabinett was grown on shale on this cool site. Its stony verve adds a touch of lemon zest on the nose. The palate is lightness itself, gently sweet but like a summer breeze carrying notions of clover. This is breezy and stony but tender on the finish. The 2024 is almost weightless. (Medium)

Description

The refinement and vibrancy of a German white wine from the Nahe region

The estate

For over 250 years, Weingut Dönnhoff has cared for a unique terroir of dizzyingly steep slopes along the Nahe. Vintage after vintage, Helmut Dönnhoff crafts great German wines from a mosaic of terroirs that express the complexity, purity, and multiple nuances of Riesling, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Gris.

Recognized beyond borders as among the greatest white wines in the world, the wines of Weingut Dönnhoff captivate with their elegance, aromatic richness, freshness, and exceptional minerality that unfolds after several decades of aging.

Vineyard

Covering 25 hectares, the terroir of this essential German estate owes its uniqueness to the diversity of its soils and exposures, offering ideal conditions for the grapes to achieve optimal ripeness. Meticulous care is given to the vines, aged 20 to 70 years, which yield low but very high-quality harvests.

The wine

This Riesling Oberhäuser Leistenberg Kabinett is a Nahe wine from southeast-facing sloped vineyards rooted in grey clay-slate soils. The vines are 25 to 45 years old.

Winemaking and aging

A rigorous selection is carried out during hand harvesting to keep only high-quality grapes. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks and large oak casks, as does the aging.

Blend

This Oberhäuser Leistenberg Kabinett 2024 is 100% Riesling.
