Wine Spectator

Alison Napjus

A vibrant, enticing rosé, with rich aromas and flavors of poached apricot, grilled nut, white cherry, saffron and anise, all set in a seamless frame. This is racy and intense, yet rides the palate, showing a plush and creamy elegance. Hints of coffee liqueur, candied orange and clover honey accent the lingering finish. Disgorged autumn 2016. Drink now through 2029.

The NV Rosé 22nd Edition captures all the best of the Krug house style. Wonderfully fresh and vibrant, with a classic hint of reduction, the 22nd is simply pristine. Krug Rosé has typically been a Champagne of freshness and tension. That is very much the case here. Readers should expect a crystalline, taut Rosé full of citrus, white flowers, chalk and red berry fruit, all supported by veins of mouthwatering minerality and acidity. This is such a compelling and alluring Rosé. This release is based on 2010, with reserve wines going back to 2005, a relatively compact span of vintages. I loved it.

An impressively fresh wine, this is the 22nd rosé blending from this producer. It has acidity, crispness and bright red-currant fruits. Maturity is only just beginning, hinting at nuts and toastiness. All this suggests that the bottling could age, so wait to drink from 2021.

Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for Krug Rosé 22ème Édition

Tasting

If the year’s Meuniers stood out for a lovely touch of freshness, the Chardonnays were more creamy. The Pinot Noirs revealed fruity aromas and delicate citrus notes. This revelation was the starting point for a delicious, smooth and generous composition, driven by red fruit yet beautifully balanced.

A rosé champagne imbued with finesse and purity

The estate

Since 1843, the House of Champagne Krug has paid tribute to the dream of its founder, Joseph Krug, by creating each year a new Edition of Krug Grande Cuvée, the most generous expression of Champagne, regardless of annual climatic variations.

The House believes that each Krug Vintage expresses the unique character of a particular year. A Krug Vintage brings together the most expressive wines from the same year, enhanced by more than ten years of ageing in the cellars. Each Krug Vintage is different: it is the Music of the year, transposed into the world of Krug.

The vineyard

With more than 250 different plots, including the prestigious Clos du Mesnil and Clos d’Ambonnay, Maison Krug holds an exceptional heritage of vines in Champagne.

The cuvée

The fruit of the fifth generation of the Krug family’s imagination, namely to create an unprecedented rosé champagne, each edition of this Krug Rosé perpetuates the tradition and the same philosophy as Krug Grande Cuvée, also going beyond the very notion of vintage.

Krug Rosé 22ème Édition is structured around the 2010 harvest. Despite highly changeable weather, the grapes were promising, but the cool conditions at the end of the season raised some concerns. The special attention given to the vineyard during this delicate period and respect for the unique character of each plot helped ensure a healthy harvest at perfect ripeness.

To add the ideal touch of freshness and lightness, a youthfulness that would gain in roundness over time, a few relatively recent reserve wines were selected from the House’s impressive library, accounting for 46% of the blend. Lastly, a red wine from a specific plot in the commune of Ay brought its sumptuous color, its length on the palate and its notes of spice to the whole. This fusion expresses all the elegance and verve characteristic of each Edition of Krug Rosé.
