Combining subtleness with complexity, the coolish Krug 2004 Brut opens with a highly elegant, fascinatingly clear, bright and refreshing bouquet of ripe (apple) fruits. Dense and round, with a delicate mineral soul, the pure but perfectly balanced 2004 reveals great finesse and weightless elegance with a long and round finish. This is a gorgeous Krug vintage that is 14 years old but still on the rise. Tasted from ID 316034 in New York in November 2018.

A graceful Champagne, wowing more for its elegance and fine integration than the underlying power and tension. The delicate mousse caresses the palate, carrying flavors of blackberry, candied kumquat and lemon sorbet with rich accents of espresso crema, pastry cream and chopped almond. Fresh and focused on the lasting, spiced finish. Disgorged autumn 2017. Drink now through 2030.

This is an extremely fresh edition and remains in a restrained mode with an intense serve of chardonnay’s lemon citrus dominating the nose alongside lime zest, bright florals, grassy elements, fresh dough, white stones and very subtle background spice. The palate has a svelte and elegant shape. Smoother than the 2002, it shares the same quality of precision but not the raging power of that vintage. The poise is unquestionable, the wine very reserved, with plenty of lemon-infused citrus flavors, hints of fresh cashew and a lot of potential. Acidity holds superbly, the dosage is exactly where it should be. This is a classic release. It’s all about chardonnay. Best from 2022 and will mature gracefully in linear style in bottle for several decades.

Disgorged in autumn 2017. Dosage 6 g/l. Tasted blind. Deep straw. Lots of energy here. This is obviously a very fine champagne. Tight bead and more youthful than the 2002 vintage. Slightly unevolved. Lots of energy. Some oak ageing?

Muscular, tight and powerful, the 2004 is not revealing itself yet, but what potential! The finish drives very far, unfurling waves of flavors that time will tame.

Description

The delicacy and elegance of a balanced Krug champagne

Nicknamed "Luminous Freshness" by the Krug Champagne House, the Krug Vintage 2004 captures the expression of this superb vintage.

After the extreme weather conditions of 2003, 2004 in Champagne has distinguished itself as a generous vintage with fruit harvested in perfect health conditions, producing expressive and structured wines.

In composing the melody of the 2004 vintage, Krug Cellar Master Éric Lebel combined the liveliness of Chardonnay (39%) and the structure of Pinot Noir (37%), while adding the tension and beautiful citrus notes of Pinot Meunier (24%). The Krug Champagne Vintage 2004 spent 12 years ageing in the cool, quiet cellars of the estate, allowing it to achieve the harmony and delicacy that serves as signature characteristics of great champagnes. A brilliant close to the trilogy of vintages that is the 2002, 2003 and 2004 vintages, the Krug Vintage 2004 stands out for its elegance, delicacy and balance.

At the tasting, the Krug Vintage 2004 presents a beautiful golden colour. Very fresh and expressive, the aromatic bouquet opens with notes of ginger, evolving candied citrus touches. The aromatic palette becomes very generous then, offering notes of yellow fruit, reminiscent of cherry, plum and lemon meringue pie. It is on the palate, however, that the champagne reveals its full personality. The palate is resplendent with notes of brioche and honey, while also remaining quite lively thanks to citrus notes. The finish stretches forth, very elegant and long. A champagne evoking "the sensations of summer mornings in Champagne," which will pair beautifully with seafood, fine fish dishes or exotic cuisine with citrus or ginger, along with lemon meringue pie for dessert.
