Vinum

Fruity, also marked by oak; spicy attack, ripe in style, creamy, powdery tannins, a smoldering fire on the finish.

The full-intensity colour alone tells you there is Petit Verdot in this wine, underlined by black pepper spice on the attack. An excellent wine overall with great lift through the palate and a juicy feel to the black fruits. Good stuff. 3.76 pH, 15% new oak. Organic certified. Thomas Duclos consultant.

This is really succulent and juicy with brambleberry, wet-earth, bark and mushroom aromas and flavors. Crushed stones as well, with a slight saltiness. It’s full-to medium-bodied with creamy tannins and light chewiness at the finish. Needs time to soften, but very pretty already and typical for the vintage. A blend of 85% merlot, 10% cabernet franc and 5% petit verdot. Try after 2025.

Tasted blind. Bright, vigorous fruit on the nose. Rather soft fruit without much structure. Easy-peasy. (JR)

The 2019 Couvent des Jacobins showed well from barrel. Now in bottle, it has an expressive, well-defined nose of vivacious red fruit laced with rose petal and sous-bois, gently unfolding with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and pliant, quite focused, and perhaps just a little less peppery than out of barrel, with a hint of herbaceousness popping on the fresh finish. Very fine. One for those who appreciate "classic" Saint-Émilion.

Silky, fresh, vibrant, and refined, a red-berry-driven wine with an olive and savory herbal edge on both nose and palate. You can enjoy it now or age it for a few years. Drink from 2023–2033.

The 2019 Couvent Des Jacobins is deep ruby/purple in color and offers a solid perfume of spiced black cherries, mulberries, dried herbs, tobacco, and iron. It’s medium-bodied on the palate, with solid tannins, good overall balance, and outstanding length. It’s a solid, thoroughly enjoyable 2019 to drink over the coming 10–15 years.

Rich plum colour, controlled black pepper spice on the attack, with olive purée coming up alongside the blackberry and blueberry fruits. Enjoyable wine with control and poise. 3.76 pH, 15% new oak. Organic certified. Thomas Duclos consultant. A wine that often really settles into itself over ageing, and you see that here.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

The 2019 Couvent des Jacobins, made from 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot, is deep garnet-purple in color. It prances out with pretty notes of kirsch, black raspberries, and rose oil, followed by suggestions of truffles and underbrush. The medium to full-bodied palate is soft, with energetic black and red berry layers and a mineral-laced finish.

[ Primeurs 2019 Score: 88-89 ] Energetic on the palate, with plenty of sap and a spicy finish. A wine of fine stature.

An estate in organic conversion, owned by the Jean family since 1902. The bouquet is fresh and fruity, revealing notes of cherry and blackcurrant followed by a touch of vanilla. The palate shows an elegant, slightly creamy character. The tannins are silky and perfectly integrated, while the acid structure brings freshness. A delicious, inviting wine. What a great success!

Dark color, of normal intensity. Nose slightly discreet and fruity. The palate starts off fruity, shows savory appeal in the mid-palate, then becomes more astringent on the finish. Medium length.

Description

The complexity and freshness of a balanced fine red wine from Saint-Émilion

The estate
Couvent des Jacobins is situated in a remote setting in the heart of the Saint-Émilion appellation. Reminiscent of a small medieval city, Couvent des Jacobins was built in the 13th century. The estate has been renowned for the production of its wines for almost seven centuries. Since 2010, Xavier Jean has been at the helm of the property, perpetuating the legacy of this iconic property.

The vineyard
The Couvent des Jacobins vineyard covers 4 different soil categories: limestone rock to the east of Saint-Émilion, clay-sand on calcareous “molasses de Fronsadais” and clay-sand on iron ore subsoils to the southwest, and clay-limestone on the northeast plateau of the village. 2019 marked the final year of the property’s conversion to organic viticulture with some biodynamic practices employed as well.

The vintage
After the frosts of the 2017 vintage and the strong downy mildew pressure of 2018, 2019 was a more serene vintage than those preceding it. In the Couvent des Jacobins vineyard, the more lenient meteorology of the year 2019 allowed for the production of another great vintage ending in -9. The harvest began on September 19, a week before that of 2018, and was spread out over 3 weeks, until October 9. The grape varieties used in the blend of the Couvent des Jacobins 2019 presented a beautiful aromatic richness, complexity and dense texture. In order to maintain the freshness and balance of the fruit, the extractions were carried out in a gentle fashion. The 2019 vintage of the Couvent des Jacobins underwent sulphur-free vinification, as did the 2017 and 2018 vintages.

The winemaking
100% gravity-led vinification, sulphur-free until the end of the malolactic fermentation, which took place barrels. 2-5 days of pre-fermentation maceration at 8-12 ° C. Total maceration from 25 to 32 days. Integral vinification of the Petit Verdot with manual punch-downs.

The blend
Merlot (85%), cabernet franc (10%), petit verdot (5%).

The tasting
Tasted as a wine future, the Couvent des Jacobins 2019 impresses with the freshness and aromatic expression of the grape varieties in its blend. Power and complexity are combined in this vintage, which also maintains a great balance. According to the estate, this great vintage ending in -9 is reminiscent of the superb 2016 vintage.
